Microbiology Medical Scientist (Part-Time, 20 Hours)
Summary
Microbiology Medical Scientist supporting the safe, compliant, and efficient day-to-day operation of BD's microbiology laboratory. This is a hands-on, laboratory-based role focused on microbiological testing, laboratory safety, and adherence to GLP and biosafety standards.
Responsibilities
1. Support the safe and efficient operation of the microbiology laboratory in line with health, safety, and quality standards
2. Prepare microbial cultures, reagents, and perform routine microbiological testing
3. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
4. Write, maintain, and enforce laboratory procedures and SOPs
5. Support and train non-scientific staff in the safe handling of live organisms
6. Facilitate laboratory access and induction for professional visitors
7. Maintain accurate laboratory records in compliance with GLP and biosafety requirements
8. Conduct routine laboratory safety checks and walkthroughs
9. Manage laboratory inventory including stock monitoring and replenishment
10. Support internal and external audit activities
11. Collaborate with EHS, Facilities, and cross-functional teams
12. Identify and implement best-practice operational procedures
13. Support the introduction of new technologies and laboratory improvements
14. Ensure adherence to quality assurance standards and professional codes of practice
Requirements
15. Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by CORU
16. Fellowship or eligibility for Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (FAMLS) or equivalent
17. Membership or eligibility for Membership of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (MAMLS) or equivalent
18. Experience working in a hospital microbiology laboratory
19. Minimum of 2 years' post-qualification experience
20. Strong knowledge of ISO requirements
21. Up-to-date knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and guidelines
22. Familiarity with laboratory information systems
23. Excellent communication, interpersonal, planning, and organisational skills
