As part of a wider growth initiative linked to our strategic plan, we are currently seeking to appoint a Principal Economics Consultant to join our growing Transportation team.About YouThe successful candidate will have a clear understanding of public sector economics and policy in an infrastructure, transportation and sustainability context, and be fully conversant with current and emerging research and analytical techniques. We are looking for an ambitious team player who wishes to assist in developing and communicating innovative and effective approaches to the analysis of public expenditure in a collaborative environment. The role would suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic team.The Dublin economics team is part of a 600-person Transportation Consulting team spread across UK and Ireland. The team provides economic input into transportation and infrastructure projects, adopting a highly collaborative approach. It prepares Economic Impact Assessments and appraisal documents (including cost-benefit analyses), with many projects requiring compliance with the Infrastructure Guidelines (IGs) and Public Spending Code (PSC). The team evaluates public spending programmes, creating evidence for policy, and provides economic advice to government departments, policymakers and private sector clients.Our current portfolio comprises a diverse mix of studies. Recent projects include the following examples.Research and evaluation advice for Transport Infrastructure Ireland, including development of Project Appraisal Guidelines, evaluation of major projects, business cases, and sustainability considerations in transport schemesLeading the delivery of the Detailed Business Case for the DART+ scheme, modelling economic and financial impacts and supporting the business case documentEconomics advisory services for the National Transport Authority of Ireland, including ex-post assessments, reviewing business case submissions, and developing detailed business cases on active travel investmentsLong-term engagement with Failte Ireland for early-stage business cases and strategic assessments for tourism investmentsDeveloping preliminary business cases, including financial appraisal and cost-benefit analysis for various sporting investments for Sports IrelandCost-benefit and economic/financial appraisals for public sector projects per the Public Spending Code for various state entities and county councilsMeasuring and evaluating public realm improvements for county councilsHere’s what you’ll do:Technical excellence in carrying out economic consulting projectsTake ownership of complex projects, delivering on time and within budget, meeting client expectationsManage the relationship between AECOM and clients as assignments progressManage projects in accordance with AECOM project management processes and internal systemsCommunicate the results of work to diverse audiencesIdentify opportunities for the AECOM economics team and convert these into salesDrive sales through effective bid management and delivery while ensuring proposals are commercially viableWork collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teamsContribute ideas and innovative approaches to projectsCollaborate across AECOM to develop and realise business growth opportunitiesProvide guidance to teach and develop junior staffQualificationsReady to push the limits of what’s possible? Here’s what we’re looking for:Degree or Masters in economics (e.g., economics, finance, mathematics, geography, engineering) from an accredited institution, or overall equivalent experienceExcellent technical skills and strong personal initiativeExperience in a similar consulting role, public sector organisation or industryPublic sector focus; many clients are government or statutory agenciesWorking knowledge of infrastructure business case, economic analysis (cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness) and financial appraisal guidelines in Ireland or internationallyExperience monetising non-market benefits using revealed preference, stated preference, or benefit transfer methodsAbility to convey complex economic issues to diverse audiences clearly and conciselyExperience in business development related to new opportunitiesStrong analytic, data management, statistics, economic modelling and econometric capabilitiesExperience developing solutions to issues such as infrastructure investment, labour markets, education and skills, deprivation and social inclusion, inward investment and business developmentPreparation of clear, well-written reports based on project outcomesExperience and interest in transport sector economics; knowledge of climate change, sustainability or tourism economics is advantageousWe celebrate diversity and welcome applications from all backgrounds and abilities.
