This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. This programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Your eligibility for this programme will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.
Job Description
Applicants should supply suitable character references and be prepared to complete a Garda vetting application form. During the placement, the participant will be introduced to and gain experience in:
Observing how a software development team works within a professional business environment
Learning the basics of web and software development ideas
Assisting with simple website or application updates
Observing how developers write, review and improve code
Supporting basic software testing and identifying simple issues or bugs
Learning how development teams organise tasks and projects
Attending team meetings to observe project planning and collaboration
Assisting with preparing simple technical notes
Becoming familiar with common development tools used by the team
Observing how technical solutions are designed to meet client or business needs
Role Description
This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.
Training
Formal Training:
Introduction to basic software and web development components
Overview of how websites and applications are built and maintained
Training on the use of basic development tools and software
Guidance on basic testing and quality checking software features
Explanation of the software development
WPEP QQI Work Experience Module
Informal Training:
Shadowing an experienced mentor during daily development tasks
Assisting with simple website updates or basic programming tasks with supervision
Observing how software projects are planned and developed within a team
Participating in team meetings to understand development discussions and planning
Supporting basic software testing and documenting issues or improvements
Learning through hands on practice
Receiving regular feedback and guidance from the mentor
Hands on experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js, MySQL(SG2.1), and modern development practices.
Mentorship from experienced engineers and technical leads
Real project experience that strengthens employability in software engineering roles.
