Substation Design Engineer (HV/MV) - Utilities
Location: Kilkenny (on-site, occasional site visits)
Contract: 12-month fixed term (with review)
Salary: €50,000-€55,000 per annum
About the role
We are advertising on behalf of our client, a leading utilities provider operating across the Energy & Telecommunications sectors. You will lead the technical delivery of HV/MV substation projects (38kV-400kV) from tender through detailed design and into construction support, ensuring compliance with Irish Grid Code, EirGrid/ESB standards and applicable IEC/HSA requirements.
Key responsibilities
Tender & proposals: Review client specs (incl. ESB Networks), prepare concept designs/SLDs, material take-offs, and technical clarifications for bids.
Design leadership: Primary, lightning and earthing design; cable routing for AIS/GIS substations.
Calculations & studies: Short-circuit, load flow, CT/VT sizing, earthing; equipment specifications (transformers, switchgear, CTs/VTs, busbar, cables).
Interfaces & coordination: Oversee external design partners; align with civil/structural and protection/telecom teams; manage doc reviews and FATs.
Compliance & safety: Ensure adherence to Grid Code, IEC standards and HSA regulations; provide limited site/commissioning support.
What we're looking for
Degree (Level 8+) in Electrical Engineering.
7-10+ years in substation design (transmission/distribution).
Familiarity with EirGrid/ESB specifications and TSO/DSO procedures (desirable).
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership (preferred).
Proficient with AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP/DigSILENT, EPLAN, MS Office.
Strong communication skills; comfortable in client-facing, multi-disciplinary settings.
Full, current driving licence.
