Offer description

Key Skills & Experience
At Medtronic you can begin a life‑long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You’ll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.
A Day in the Life
The Coronary and Renal Denervation (CRDN) Operating Unit is dedicated to transforming care for patients with coronary artery disease and hypertension. We combine innovative devices, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence to support clinicians and improve patient outcomes worldwide. The work you do will impact patients globally and help support Medtronic’s mission of alleviating pain, restoring health, and extending life.
The Senior Principal System Architect – Digital Ecosystem provides senior technical leadership for CRDN’s connected digital products and platforms. This role is responsible for establishing a shared digital ecosystem architecture that enables multiple products to scale safely, securely, and consistently within a regulated medical device environment. Operating at a system‑of‑systems and platform level, the architect guides architectural decisions that span products, technologies, and organizational boundaries. The role balances near‑term product delivery needs with longer‑term ecosystem evolution, bringing clarity, structure, and technical judgement to complex, cross‑functional decisions.
Role Overview
In this role, you establish and maintain a CRDN digital ecosystem reference architecture that product teams can use to guide real delivery decisions, while shaping its evolution over time. You work closely with CRDN R&D, Digital Product, and enterprise partners to define shared architectural patterns and platform capabilities that support multiple products and avoid fragmentation. You lead architectural discussions and trade‑off decisions when priorities conflict across products, timelines, or enterprise standards. This role focuses on architectural coherence and outcomes, not direct ownership of delivery teams or individual product implementations.
Ecosystem & Platform Architecture

Define and evolve the CRDN digital ecosystem reference architecture across connected systems, platforms, and services
Operate at a system‑of‑systems level, ensuring products contribute to a cohesive ecosystem rather than isolated solutions
Establish architectural principles, standards, and interfaces that enable consistency while supporting product team execution

Architectural Leadership & Alignment

Provide senior technical leadership with architectural decision authority for cross‑product and cross‑platform trade‑offs
Lead architecture reviews and decision discussions, offering clear recommendations in ambiguous or conflicting situations
Align CRDN product teams, Global IT, and enterprise stakeholders around shared architectural direction and outcomes

Platform Capabilities & Non‑Functional Requirements

Guide architectural approaches for software lifecycle management, connectivity, and system observability across products
Ensure data and platform capabilities support product needs while meeting privacy, security, and regulatory expectations
Embed cybersecurity, quality, and safety considerations into ecosystem‑level architectural decisions

Quality, Safety & Regulatory Alignment

Ensure ecosystem architecture supports applicable medical device software and system standards
Assess and communicate the impact of architectural decisions on product risk, compliance, and verification strategies
Partner with Quality, Regulatory, and Security teams to ensure decisions are traceable and defensible

Collaboration & Organizational Impact

Collaborate with engineering, product, IT, and external partners to guide shared architectural approaches
Promote architectural reuse, consistency, and continuous improvement across CRDN
Contribute to broader digital transformation efforts by shaping how ecosystem capabilities are conceived and adopted

What Success Looks Like

A clearly adopted CRDN digital ecosystem reference architecture guiding product decisions
Reduced fragmentation and duplication across digital products through shared architectural approaches
Improved alignment and decision clarity across engineering, product, IT, and quality partners
Digital ecosystem capabilities that enable product delivery without compromising safety, quality, or regulatory compliance
A durable architectural foundation that supports both current products and future growth

Qualifications – Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software, Computer, Electrical Engineering, or related field
10+ years of relevant experience (8+ with MS and 6+ with PhD) in systems, platform, or ecosystem architecture
Experience designing and evolving edge‑to‑cloud or connected system architectures
Experience with software updates, fleet/device management, telemetry pipelines, or IoT‑style systems
Understanding of medical device software quality, safety, and regulatory expectations and how architectural decisions impact compliance and risk
Experience designing secure, distributed systems, including identity management, encryption, and secure communications
Hands‑on experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms
Experience working in agile, cross‑functional product teams
Strong communication, influence, and technical decision‑making skills

Nice to Have

Background in regulated or safety‑critical software development (e.g., IEC 62304, ISO 14971)
Familiarity with healthcare data privacy concepts and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR principles)
Experience enabling analytics or AI/ML capabilities in product systems
Experience with enterprise architecture tools (e.g., LeanIX, Bizzdesign, ValueBlue)
Understanding of clinical workflows or healthcare data usage

Benefits & Compensation
Compensation includes a competitive salary and flexible benefits package. This position is eligible for a short‑term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). Pay range: Ireland: €94,720.00 – €142,080.00 EUR. We offer a wide range of benefits, resources, and competitive compensation plans to support you at every career and life stage.
Equal opportunity employment: Medtronic is an equal opportunity employer and encourages qualified applicants from all backgrounds.
