Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division Cootehill Cavan
Abbott Nutrition produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name “Similac”. To complement the range of “Similac” infant formulae, the facility also manufactures a range of follow-on formulae under the brand name “Gain”. The essential ingredients include liquid skim milk, carbohydrates, vegetable oils, vitamins, and minerals. The product is blended, pasteurized, dried, and packaged at the site and distributed to Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Canada.
Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility for infant formulae within Abbott worldwide. Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility, which processes 500,000 liters per day. This secure supply, along with Ireland’s reputation as a green, clean environment, is of strategic importance to Abbott Nutrition.
The role of Senior Automation Engineer involves:
Purpose of the Job:
This senior role is responsible for developing and implementing a robust Automation strategy across the site. Working with the Site Engineering Manager and Divisional Engineering, the role will coordinate inputs from all site functions, IT, sister sites, vendors, and automation SMEs in Cootehill to implement appropriate solutions and investments.
This position requires excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, interacting with all organizational levels, managing competing priorities in line with business strategy.
Responsibilities include:
* Operational Technology Strategy & Roadmap: Develop and maintain the OT Strategy and Roadmap, including Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory opportunities. Use technical standards supporting the OT strategy, fostering a standardized approach to automation.
* OT Project Governance: Ensure OT projects align with site strategy and business needs. Oversee third-party suppliers, system integrators, and service providers following OT standards. Evaluate technical solutions, execution, commissioning, and validation.
* OT Lifecycle Management: Manage the lifecycle of OT infrastructure, applications, and support services. Develop processes for the retention, retirement, and replacement of automation applications. Ensure maintenance, compliance, and availability of OT systems.
* OT Team Development: Enhance skills of automation engineers for current and future site needs. Collaborate with peers to ensure alignment with best practices across the network.
Education & Experience:
* Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science with 5+ years of experience in a technology role within operations or manufacturing.
* Experience managing automated systems, knowledge of GAMP lifecycle, industry standards like ANSI/ISA-S88, S95, PackML.
* Experience with systems, projects, and initiatives in Information Systems, Automation, and Operations.
* Experience in cGMP regulated environments, familiar with FDA cGxP, 21 CFR Part 11, and software validation.
* Knowledge of Siemens PLCs, SCADA, OSIsoft Pi Data Historians is preferred.
* People management experience is a plus but not essential.
