Articles 16 and 17 of Directive *******/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications, as amended by Directive *******/EU sets out the system of "Automatic Recognition based on professional experience".
Under this system, if, in a Member State, access to or pursuit of one of the activities listed in List I of Annex IV of the Directive *******/EC, as amended is contingent upon possession of general, commercial or professional knowledge and aptitudes, that Member State shall recognise previous pursuit of the activity in another Member State, as sufficient proof of such knowledge and aptitudes.
Ireland transposed relevant aspects of Directive *******/EC, as amended with S.I. No. ****** - European Union (Recognition of Professional Qualifications) Regulations **** .
The professions of a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) and a Qualified Certifier (QC) in the Republic of Ireland fall under the activities set out in List I of Annex IV of the Directive.
Therefore, comparable professional experience of the type and durations set out under Article 17 of the Directive may be recognised for the purposes of access to the Registered Gas Installer (RGI) scheme or Safe Electric scheme under a system of Automatic Recognition.
The implementation of an Automatic Recognition System aims to improve compliance with EU Directive *******/EC, as amended.
The Automatic Recognition System applies only to individuals who meet the definition of an 'eligible person' under S.I. ****** and hold an EEA Certificate which has been issued by the Competent Authority in the home Member State, seeking to have their qualifications recognised in the Republic of Ireland.
Applicants who are not in possession of an EEA Certificate may still apply to have their qualifications recognised by applying through the existing process in place (General Recognition System).
