Overview of Role
The Lead Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist will provide a leadership role in the supervision and management of all radiation therapists.
The Lead Clinical Specialist will direct the daily operations of the radiotherapy team in the delivery of a safe, quality service.
The successful candidate will manage opportunities to improve patient safety and will participate in projects and programs designed to reduce errors, improve processes, and to create a culture of continuous quality improvement resulting in an exceptional patient experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Standard Responsibilities
Clinical Operations
Coordinates the delivery of radiation therapy within the Radiation Oncology Department.
Manage the delivery of radiation therapy services at a local level, supporting the Radiotherapy Operations Manager and local leadership team in providing high quality services to patients.
Through positive leadership techniques influences and oversees all radiation therapists.
Ensures adequate personnel coverage to meet volume demands and adjust schedules as necessary in order to ensure patient safety standards.
Develops/Implements/Administers network policies and procedures to standardise quality patient care
Produces high quality work in a timely fashion to meet established deadlines.
Work is accurate and substantiated by fact.
Will demonstrate effective communication techniques with patients, staff, management, and senior leadership in daily operations.
Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
Participates in billing in collaboration with RTSM and Consultant Radiation Oncologists.
Report directly to the RTSM, the successful candidate will deputise for the RTSM in his/her absence.
Serve as a role model of excellent patient service by responding constructively to the needs of both staff and patients.
Reports any patient or visitor complaints to the Radiation Therapy Service Manager.
Other Ad-Hoc duties as assigned.
Quality Assurance / CQI Program
Prioritise patient safety at all times.
Participate in the development of radiotherapy policies, procedures, work instructions and clinical protocols and in the process of internal and external audit.
Evaluates the technical performance of the Radiation therapist and works with management to set goals and performance improvement plans.
Collaborates with the Consultant Radiation Oncologists and Physicists during machine breakdowns and reports any issues with equipment.
Responsible for machine quality assurance, downtime and equipment report logs.
Oversee Radiotherapy Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Activities.
Participates in CQI meetings, goals and objectives for improvement, and measures results.
Works in conjunction with the Radiation Oncologists and all staff to maintain high standards for quality service.
Regulatory Affairs Management
Have a working knowledge of the HIQA Standards as they apply to the role.
Coordinates the regulatory compliance activities and maintains continuous departmental readiness for inspections and surveys.
Works with the Radiation Protection Officer, medical physicists, Clinical Director, Radiotherapy Operations Manager and participates in the safety compliance program.
Reports as required to the risk register and participates in risk assessments within the radiotherapy area.
Continuing Education Program Management
Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
Demonstrates an understanding of change management and adaptability skills.
Demonstrates negotiation and influencing skills.
Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications
Candidates on receipt of application must have:
Completion of a qualification in Radiation Therapy recognised by the Radiographers Registration Board at CORU.
Maintain annual registration with CORU.
Experience
Have a minimum of 6 years fulltime (or an aggregate of 6 years) post-qualification clinical experience.
