Carbon Technician

Boora

(Open to public competition)

The successful candidate will be an integral part of the carbon research team, supporting the monitoring of carbon exchange from PCAS bogs. This varied role will involve maintaining and calibrating highly sensitive gas analysers and other environmental equipment, preparing and refining standard operating procedures, and collecting soil and water samples in diverse environments. The candidate will also contribute to preparing time-series data and geospatial analyses, and play a key role in developing and implementing robust QA/QC procedures to ensure the highest standards in our research.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:

* Greenhouse Gas Monitoring – Undertake, as part of a two person team, high-resolution measurements of carbon exchange, including both CO₂ and CH₄ gases, across multiple peatlands. This will involve travel to and from remote locations to perform in-situ measurements using a LI-7810 infrared trace gas analyser and static chambers. Responsibilities will also include organised gathering of high-quality data from these measurements, as well as from eddy covariance towers and other meteorological in-situ sensors on remote sites.
* Hydro-meteorological Equipment – Support the calibration, maintenance, and operational verification of instrumentation used to measure hydro-meteorological variables and GHG fluxes. Duties will include regular site visits for equipment inspection, liaison with third-party suppliers, and the integration and quality control of meteorological datasets collected via on-site environmental monitoring stations.
* Soil and Water Sampling – Undertake, as part of a two person team, the collection of soil and water samples in accordance with established scientific protocols, including the extraction of peat cores using a peat auger. Ensure the preservation, labelling, and chain-of-custody documentation of all samples prior to transport to accredited laboratories. Spot sampling of peat drainage channels may also be conducted as required for supplementary analyses.
* Assist in the preparation of technical reports and presentations to fulfil reporting requirements under the PCAS scheme and other projects.
* Assist with time-series, statistical, and geospatial data analysis, utilising tools such as Excel and, preferably, the R Statistical Software Package and Python. This will involve processing and modelling carbon flux datasets across PCAS sites to identify temporal trends, spatial patterns, and underlying environmental drivers.
* Provide necessary data, documentation, and support to enable the company to comply with statutory and regulatory reporting requirements, including AERs, and to facilitate effective communication and agreement of bog rehabilitation plans with the Environmental Protection Agency.
* All employees are expected to co-operate fully with all provisions taken by the company for ensuring Health and Safety, and Welfare of co-employees and members of the public using the premises.
* Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team's, objectives.

The Person
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge and attributes:

* Level 8+ qualification in Environmental Science/Management, Physics, Engineering or related scientific subject or equivalent.
* Minimum 2 years' experience in technical role.
* A strong understanding of natural GHG exchange, including biogeochemical controls on CO₂ and CH₄ fluxes in peatlands, is essential.
* Excellent report writing and communication skills are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential.
* Experience with R, Python, ArcGIS, and remote sensing for data analysis and spatial interpretation is highly desirable.

The selection process for this role will include candidate screening from application.
