Tipperary University Hospital (TippUH), located in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, is a Level III Acute Hospital. It is part of the HSE Dublin & South East and governed by the Executive Management Team, which oversees clinical and corporate functions to support safe, efficient, high-quality patient care. A key component of this care is the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections.
The hospital has 256 inpatient beds and 22 day beds, serving a wide catchment area including South Tipperary, West Waterford, North Cork, and parts of North Tipperary, with a population of up to 160,000. It offers a broad range of acute hospital services, including outpatient facilities and an Oncology outpatient treatment service.
Tipperary University Hospital is part of the HSE Dublin & South East Health Region, which covers counties such as Tipperary South, Waterford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford, Wicklow, and South Dublin. This region includes 11 hospitals, both statutory and voluntary.

Tipperary University Hospital Maternity Services
The maternity unit handles approximately 1,000 deliveries annually, providing essential services to women and families in Tipperary and surrounding counties. It aligns with The National Maternity Strategy and is part of Ireland East Women and Infants Directorate (ISWID). The team has successfully implemented objectives such as ultrasonography, bereavement care, lactation services, and perinatal mental health services. Plans are underway to develop Community Midwifery services.
The maternity services offer:
* A 20-bed unit providing antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care
* A Special Care Baby Unit with 5 cots for babies over 32 weeks’ gestation, including repatriation from other units
* Two delivery/labour ward rooms with 24-hour epidural service, and facilities for emergency Category 1 LSCS and other surgical procedures
* Outpatient antenatal clinics on-site (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) and outreach clinics in Primary Care Centres across Tipperary
* Flexible booking options (face-to-face and virtual) and phlebotomy services
* A fetal assessment unit available three afternoons weekly
* A Midwifery-led service within the Supported Care Pathway, with ongoing development
* Plans for Community Midwifery and Early Transfer Home services
* Antenatal education classes conducted by a multidisciplinary team
* Scanning department providing booking, anatomy, growth, placental location, and reassurance scans
* Specialist posts in ultrasound, bereavement, diabetes, and perinatal mental health
* An emergency Gynae Room operational 24/7, staffed by midwives and NCHDs
* Recent improvements include maternity unit refurbishment, induction of labour rooms, and CTG monitoring support
* Implementation of Viewpoint 6 and Video Enabled Care for gestational diabetes management
* The Termination of Pregnancy Service commenced in Q1 2025, with plans for an Ambulatory Gynaecology Service in 2025
* Future plans include constructing a new maternity unit.
