Overview of the Role
As an Assistant General Secretary, you are a senior member of the organisation, providing strategic leadership and supporting colleagues, workplace representatives, and lay leaders across assigned areas.
Key responsibilities include organising and member support, industrial relations, and management and projects.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
* Build and maintain strong workplace union structures.
* Engage with workers to identify organic leaders and activate them.
* Ensure effective mapping of workplaces and develop representatives.
* Collaborate with membership training and development to empower leaders.
* Support branches and lay leaders in recruitment and training of members and activists.
* Advise, inform, and support branches on matters relevant to members and workers.
* Organise recognition of new workplaces as appropriate.
* Deliver relevant and engaging communication strategies.
* Negotiate on behalf of the union on all matters relating to pay and conditions of service.
* Develop deep knowledge of social, economic, political, and industrial forces affecting workers.
* Ensure structures are in place to represent members in grievances, disciplinary action, harassment, and bullying.
* Directly represent members in complex or higher‑risk cases.
* Prepare and present submissions to third‑party fora.
* Provide regular support and constructive feedback to the team.
* Lead a team, guide goal‑setting and development plans.
* Propose and contribute to union projects, campaigns, and initiatives.
* Additional relevant tasks and duties.
About Your Team
* You report to the Head of Division or another National Secretary; all staff are accountable to the General Secretary.
* Depending on your assignment, you may lead a team including Industrial Officers, Assistant Industrial Officers, and Administrators.
About You
* Significant record of leadership and accomplishment in organising workers or large‑scale groups.
* Seasoned negotiator with experience representing groups in rights‑conflict contexts.
* Collaborative leadership skills with a track record of developing, coaching, and mentoring others.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of employment law and labour relations.
* Empathetic and able to work with people facing challenging situations.
* Effective written and oral communication skills.
* Comfortable speaking before large groups or to the media.
* Strong listening skills.
* Motivated with organisational, time‑management, and IT skills.
* Permission to live and work in Ireland.
Desired Additional Qualifications
* Knowledge of public sector structures (civil service, local authorities, health sector, state companies).
* Understanding of government financial and funding arrangements.
* Relevant tertiary qualification.

Salary and Benefits
The initial salary for this position will be on the first point of a nine‑point AGS scale: €80,967 | €81,689 | €84,866 | €88,063 | €91,266 | €94,435 | €97,624; with two long‑service increments: €101,240 (LSI1) | €107,004 (LSI2).
Entry above the first point is possible in certain circumstances.

Travel
Regular travel within Ireland is required. A car and a driving licence are ideal; subsistence payments are available at civil service rates.
Hours
This is a full‑time, permanent position. Normal office hours apply, though overtime and weekend work may arise. You have discretion to manage your hours within healthy boundaries.
Location
Fórsa has offices in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Sligo. Positions are primarily based in Dublin but may open elsewhere.
