Job Title:Engineer Grade III (Mechanical & Electrical)Employer:The Office of Public WorksCounty:MeathClosing Date:3pm, Thursday, 12th February 2026Starting Salary:€39,474About the Employer:The Office of Public Works (OPW) is a key service provider to the Government. The ethos is to be client focused, to ensure timely delivery of services and to provide value for money. A core part of its remit is maintaining and presenting Ireland's most iconic heritage properties and for the management and maintenance of the State's property portfolio, providing accommodations to central Government Departments, An Garda Síochána and other State agencies. It is also the lead agency for flood risk management in Ireland.The Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) Engineering Section headed by the Chief M&E Engineer is a unit within the OPW's Estate Portfolio Management Section. The main function of the M&E Engineering Section is the design and maintenance of building services in existing and new buildings for Government Departments and other State organisations.About the Role:The Engineer Grade III (M&E) in the M&E Engineering Section will report to an Engineer Grade II (Project Engineer), who reports to an Engineer Grade I (Senior Project Engineer). The Engineer Grade III (M&E) will be responsible for both the Mechanical and Electrical areas of work, involving the design of mechanical and electrical building services and the supervision of work on site.The role will involve preparing drawings, specifications, tender and contract documents, scheduling of planned maintenance in buildings and the supervising of specialist contractors. The Engineer Grade III (M&E) will usually be part of a team that includes other building professionals such as Architects, Structural Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, etc. and administrative staff.The key duties and responsibilities of the role may include the following:• Assisting with and contributing to the detailed design, specification, procurement, commissioning and on-site supervision of new M&E installations in OPW buildings including the following:o Electrical installations including (i.e. switchgear, general power, lighting, emergency lighting, data and telecommunication networks, transformers, stand-by generators and Uninterruptible Power Systems);o Fire alarm systems;o Intruder Alarms, Door Access systems, CCTV and security systems;o Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems;o Mains, Hot and cold water services;o Soil, waste and internal drainage systems;o Passenger and goods lifts;o Building Management Systems;o Solar PV Installations;o EV Charging Infrastructure;• Directing, supervising and liaising with general and drawing office personnel and other technical staff;• Preparing technical reports on mechanical and electrical installations in both existing and proposed buildings;• Assisting in preparing budgets for maintenance and new works;• Preparing and monitoring records with particular regard to ISO accredited office management systems;• Maintaining continuous professional development (CPD) and training records as required by OPW as an Engineers Ireland Accredited Employer;• Participating as a technical representative on internal and external working groups.About You:Candidates must have on or before Thursday, 12th February 2026:A qualification at Level 8 (Honours Bachelor's Degree) on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) (or NARIC Ireland Foreign Qualifications equivalent), accredited by Engineers Ireland in Building Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical and Sustainable Engineering.Candidate must also demonstrate that they have:Good attention to detail with a structured and organised approach to task planning, execution and completion;A good knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical systems in buildings;The ability to tackle problems of a technical nature with a practical approach;The ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary and/or engineering team;The ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines;Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to write technical reports that are clear, well-structured and unambiguous;Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally;Good analytical ability and sound judgement;A high degree of adaptability, flexibility and motivation with a commitment to high quality output and service;A commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) including keeping updated and fully informed on developments in relevant areas;Good Information Technology (IT) skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.The Closing Date for this competition is Thursday, 12th of February at 3pm.We are committed to a policy of equal opportunity and encourage applications under all nine grounds of the Employment Equality Act.
