Postdoctoral Researcher – Full Time, Fixed Term Contract
School of Computer Science, University of Galway, Ireland.
This position is funded by the Horizon Europe project BORDERLINK (Border Control Agencies for Interlinked and Interoperable Future). The contract runs from 1 June 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 29 February 2028.
Project
27 Customs Administrations of EU Member States collaborate to ensure the effective functioning of the EU Customs Union and safeguard EU citizens from external threats. While operating under the unified EU legislation (UCC) and engaging in strategic and operational cooperation, interoperability issues often undermine the effectiveness of customs cooperation at tactical levels, such as border posts, customs laboratories, and back offices.
The Horizon Europe project BORDERLINK (“Border Control Agencies for Interlinked and Interoperable Future”) addresses this challenge by innovating, developing, and testing technologies, reference databases, and standards for higher interoperability and interconnectivity. The project brings together 18 partners from across Europe, including universities, commercial organisations, and customs agencies.
Within the project, the key role of the University of Galway includes planning, requirements, specifications, implementation and evaluation of a cloud library and dataspace for spectral data, and procurement of handheld Raman devices that will be used by multiple partners, including customs authorities, for data collection.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, gather requirements and specify solutions for the cloud library and data space for spectral data.
Implement and evaluate the cloud library and data space, ensuring interoperability.
Procure handheld Raman devices for use by multiple partners and manage logistics.
Coordinate data collection and research activities with customs authorities and other partners.
