Job Description
The Department of Defence invites applications for appointment to the position of General Operative (Grade 1). This competition is open to all candidates who meet the minimum eligibility criteria.
Civil Defence is a nationally coordinated, volunteer-based organisation dedicated to supporting the country’s front-line emergency services and enhancing community safety. Operating under the Department of Defence and delivered through local authorities, Civil Defence provides a highly trained, responsive capability that assists in times of crisis and at major public events.

This position offers an opportunity to contribute to a respected organisation that operates at the heart of public service, preparedness, and emergency management across Ireland.
EXPERIENCE / REQUIREMENTS (Mandatory)
Knowledge of basic Health & Safety practices and personal responsibility for safe working (or willingness to undertake training).
Manual Handling, First Aid and Fire Marshal training (or willingness to undertake training).
Full clean Class B drivers’ licence for manual and automatic transmission vehicles which permits the candidate to legally drive in Ireland (required to drive Civil Defence vehicles).
Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office (training provided for VEMS).
The ability to work under own initiative and as part of a team.
Desired
Experience of operating light machinery such as lawnmower, strimmer, hedge cutter, powerwasher and other grounds maintenance equipment.
Possess good communications skills, enthusiastic to work in a demand driven environment.
Ability to learn quickly and be adaptable in approach, good attention to detail, ability to work well alone and as part of a team.
Experience of volunteering with and/or knowledge of Civil Defence (useful but not essential).
Desirable Skills/Attributes
A full, clean and current driving licence, category B.
Manual Handling, First Aid and Fire Marshal training.
