Portiuncula University Hospital comprises 194 beds, with plans for a new 50-bed ward opening in August 2024. The hospital provides 24/7 acute surgery, medicine, critical care, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, and an Emergency Department with 30,283 attendances in 2023. It serves East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon, and Offaly, with a referral pathway to the Midlands.
Ballinasloe, the largest town in County Galway, offers excellent schools, is near the University of Galway and the University of Shannon in Athlone, and is accessible by public transport. The area features numerous sports, leisure, and entertainment facilities, with easy access to Galway City.
The Department of Medicine aims to provide a safe, consultant-led, patient-centred service. The post involves a 1:8 on-call commitment, supporting the reduction of locum reliance and implementing the National Acute Medicine Programme, aligning with recommendations from the National Taskforce on Medical Staffing.
The post holder will ensure NCHDs receive adequate training and education, assisting in delivering undergraduate curricula from NUIG and UL, and improving linkages with GPs for better patient access. The role involves supporting and developing a comprehensive Gastroenterology service, functioning as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing general and critical care services, and participating in service development initiatives.
Responsibilities include assessment, diagnosis, treatment, implementing integrated care systems, designing practice plans with the Clinical Director, teaching, and facilitating ongoing medical education. The role aims to enhance service quality, efficiency, and patient outcomes through collaboration and continuous improvement.
