Summary: A biopharmaceutical company in West Cork is looking for an experienced Occupational Hygienist to provide support for API manufacturing operations. The successful candidate will deliver technical leadership in occupational hygiene, chemical safety, and exposure risk management, both during routine production and throughout process changeovers. This role is vital in ensuring the safe manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients through robust hazard identification, exposure assessment, and the development of effective control strategies. Responsibilities: Provide onsite occupational hygiene support to API production operations, covering batch manufacturing, cleaning activities, charging, sampling, and material handling. Support process changeovers, new product introductions (NPI), and campaign-based manufacturing by ensuring that health risks are thoroughly assessed and controlled. Participate in change reviews to identify potential safety impacts resulting from modifications to processes, equipment, or raw materials. Review batch records, process descriptions, and equipment design to evaluate exposure potential during both normal and non-routine operations. Collaborate with production and MS&T teams to develop safe work practices and control strategies, especially for high-potency or hazardous APIs. Identify, assess, and control chemical, physical, and biological hazards associated with API manufacturing processes. Conduct qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments, including personal and area air monitoring, to verify the effectiveness of controls. Interpret exposure data against Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs), Permitted Daily Exposures (PDEs), Acceptable Daily Exposures (ADEs), and apply control banding approaches to provide clear, risk-based recommendations. Prepare technical reports and communicate findings to operations, engineering, and leadership teams. Support the design, selection, and verification of engineering controls, such as isolators, containment systems, local exhaust ventilation (LEV), and comprehensive ventilation strategies. Define and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) requirements, including selection of respirators and program support. Provide input into the design of facilities and equipment for new or modified API manufacturing areas. Offer specialist guidance on chemical safety and hazard communication, including Globally Harmonised System (GHS) classification, labelling, and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) review. Support incident investigations, spills, and deviations by providing exposure assessment and legislative guidance. Deliver targeted occupational hygiene and chemical safety training to production, engineering, and support teams. Drive continuous improvement in occupational hygiene programmes, standards, and monitoring strategies across API operations. Contribute to site EHS governance forums and cross-functional technical teams. Qualifications & Experience: Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety, Hygiene, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline. Minimum of five years experience supporting occupational hygiene in API manufacturing or highly hazardous chemical environments. Strong knowledge of exposure assessment, containment strategies, and control of potent compounds. Excellent technical writing, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills. Familiarity with GMP environments and pharmaceutical regulatory expectations. Professional certification (e.g., CIH, Chartered/Licentiate Occupational Hygienist) is desirable.
