Librarian – Literary Collection Developer

Poetry Ireland is seeking a passionate, qualified librarian to lead the development of a new literary collection at No. 11 Parnell Square. The deadline for applications is Friday 30 May 2025 at 5pm.

Overview Poetry Ireland / Éigse Éireann is Ireland's resource organisation for the promotion and development of Irish poetry at home and abroad. Our mission is to connect people and poetry. A major project currently in hand is the development of Poetry Ireland House / Áras Éigse Éireann House which will open at No. 11 Parnell Square in winter 2025 with our partners Irish Heritage Trust.

The location in the north inner city, an area with high public footfall, is culturally rich and diverse and located within a densely populated hinterland. The Seamus Heaney Poetry Library is a new addition to our public offering and will be at the heart of our activities from 2026 onward.

The successful candidate will be responsible for cataloguing and collection management, providing an excellent service to library users and growing new audiences through outreach and engagement. Reporting to the Director and Operations Manager, the Librarian will be accountable for implementing library policies and procedures, including the creation, maintenance, and enrichment of metadata representing collections.

The role requires knowledge of Koha and other library management systems, as well as experience in working with digital libraries. The Librarian will also contribute to the rationalisation and review of storage arrangements and rehousing of library materials.

Key Responsibilities:

* Catalogue and classify collections, including rare items and pamphlets of research interest, using international standards.
">
* Develop and manage cataloguing projects to provide physical and digital access to library holdings.
">
* Contribute to the development of a high-quality reference service to library users.
">
* Lead on community engagement with the library, coordinating exhibitions, events, and classes in person and/or online.
">
* Maintain and update the library's web pages and social media presence.
">
* Collaborate with the Communications and Marketing manager to create content for newsletters and other publications.
">

Requirements

">

To be considered for this role, you will need:

">
">
* An Honours degree (level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications) or higher in a relevant field.
">
* A post-graduate qualification in librarianship or information studies (level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications).
">
* At least three years' experience working in a library or similar institution, with a proven track record of library management procedures and policies.
">
* Knowledge of developing audiences for literary collections, exhibition facilities, and public engagement activities.
">
* Experience of collection management, including metadata creation and enrichment.
">
* Excellent planning, reporting, writing, and presentation skills.
">
* Self-motivation, with the ability to prioritise a varied workload and meet deadlines.
">
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
">
* Excellent attention to detail.
">
* Experience of working in a special collections environment.
">
* Demonstrable experience of exhibition curation and display.
">
* Awareness of current developments in the library sector.
">
* A love for and knowledge of poetry.
