Reporting regularly to the Project Director / Contracts Manager, the SDM will manage the project Design team and liaise with the Head of Technical Design. The SDM is to develop and implement successful design strategies, outlining how the design team / specialist package contractors will create deliverables and implement them on the project. Communication / Negotiation skills the SDM, when working with other teams, will guide design and monitor changes to the design. It is important that the SDM communicates with the other project team members leading them to understand why certain aspects of design are more critical and to prioritise workflows. Conflict management since the SDM manages a team of multiple designers, the SDM should be able to manage and resolve conflict between individual team members and between different teams. If the SDM is unable to resolve the conflict, it should immediately escalate to the Head of Technical Design. Leadership the SDM must be able to deliver clear feedback to the team members. The SDM must be able to forward plan and motivate both the Design Team and the respective specialist Sub Contractors to enable them to work together to produce a coordinated and coherent design. The SDM, in conjunction with the Director of Safety and the Project Manager, must strive to eliminate health and safety risks in the design by implementing safer construction techniques. The SDM will be required to present their ideas effectively and to be able to evaluate the ideas of others whilst in meetings. The SDM will be required to acquire an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the construction project. Design Team The Senior Design Manager will manage a team of several designers, evaluating individual design deliverables and overall team performance. They are also to deliver critical feedback where needed and ensure the correct release of design information at the correct time throughout the duration of a project. Design is critically important to the projects success, and it is the Senior Design Managers responsibility to collaborate with other design teams to ensure that success. It is equally important to identify critical delays and obstructions to maintaining the correct flow of information. The SDM is to escalate to the Head of Technical Design any identifiable failings as soon as possible and present / assist with a plan to implement the required corrective action. The SDM must ensure the design process recognises current legislation, standards and codes of practice, where appropriate. The SDM must keep up to date with changing legislation and codes of practice to ensure compliance. This will require a thorough understanding of technical, regulatory and commercial issues as well as pure design considerations. Continual CPD will be made available to allow the SDM fulfil this role.
