We are seeking a nurse to join our busy orthopaedic practice, which is completely specialised in shoulder care. Training will be provided so that the nurse becomes specialised in orthopaedic shoulder care. The role will involve working closely with the consultant surgeon and the administrative team, as well as with external colleagues across nursing and physiotherapy.
This is a full time role (Monday to Friday), based entirely at UPMC-Sports Surgery Clinic, and with no nights or weekend work required.
Responsibilities and Duties
· Practice Nursing according to the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland) and Professional Clinical Guidelines.
· Manage patient queries, with assistance from administrative staff.
· Pass appropriate queries to the Surgeon, where her input is needed or where there is any uncertainty about the correct advice to give the patient.
· Phone post op patients at home the day after discharge (or Monday after Friday day cases or Saturday discharges) to check in, answer any early questions, reassure on any concerns and pick up any problems that need to be relayed to the Surgeon.
· Visit inpatients on the ward when the Surgeon is not available to do so (e.g. Friday mornings at UPMC-SSC).
· Assist the Surgeon at outpatient clinics on Mondays and Tuesdays by seeing patients first/screening, dictating letters, helping with data collection for PROMs (e.g. OBERD).
· Follow up on data collection and analysis for surgery patients in order to track outcomes and support research.
· See post op patients for their first post op clinic appointment, take care of wound/dressing issues, advise on post op care, provide physio instructions.
· Help the Surgeon to plan theatre cases in terms of order of lists, equipment needed (liaising with reps) and sending out the planned list order to theatre and scheduling/admissions at each hospital (Beacon and SSC). This is done monthly, typically in the third week of each month for the following month (currently done by the Surgeon on her own, would envisage doing this together with the Nurse Specialist initially and as the Nurse Specialist gains experience then the Surgeon's input might be needed less).
· Learn to triage referrals into Routine and Soon categories in order to help with screening and planning clinics.
· Undertake a prescribing course (costs covered by the practice) and be able to write prescriptions when needed in the office (e.g. post operative pain medication, antibiotic prophylaxis for dental work).
· Undertake a joint injections course course (costs covered by the practice) and ultimately be able to perform subacromial and glenohumeral shoulder injections in clinic.
· There would be scope to consider the Nurse Specialist undertaking other additional advanced qualifications and some financial support may be offered for that.
Qualifications
· Education level: BSc degree in Nursing
· Experience: minimum five years' post graduation experience
· Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to manage workload efficiently and to deal with patients empathetically
· Knowledge and training in peri-operative nursing and wound management
· Computer literate and facile with email, basic MS Office functions (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and calendars on email applications
· Candidates must be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses kept by the Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland) or be entitled to be so registered.
· Post holders must maintain annual registration with Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland) such that indemnity insurance can be maintained.
