Job Title: Surgical Registrar - Immediate Start Department: General Surgery Reports to: Clinically and professionally responsible to the attending Consultant and/or Chief of Surgery.
Administratively accountable to the Head of the NCHD Office Date: ****, immediate start, full time and part time contracts available Overall Purpose of Job The mission of Beacon Hospital is to provide quality care to all patients, in a respectful, safe and compassionate environment.
In exercising this mission, Beacon Hospital will adhere to all health and safety regulations.
To provide care to in-patients in Beacon Hospital, and to any other patients who require acute surgical intervention that can be provided by a General Surgical Registrar.
The Department of Surgery at Beacon Hospital is a consultant delivered service.
The team consists of the General Surgical Consultant who works in collaboration with Surgical Registrars, SHO's and interns in patient care and in formulating management plans for patients.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables To act under the supervision of the Surgical Consultant in the provision of a General Surgical service and to support the Surgical Consultant in their duties.
To admit patients from the Emergency Department using Meditech (Electronic Patient Record).
To attend daily ward rounds with the surgical team (SHO Interns).
Take hand over of patients from previous shift Registrar, so that continuity of care is ensured and immediate decisions are made and orders written.
To review patients on a regular basis in accordance with the plan of care made at the beginning of the shift and inform the consultant of any issues or problems.
Document review findings in clinical notes in a timely and legible manner.
Order investigations, including radiology, blood tests, function tests, etc. as required by patient plan of care i.e. as directed by Consultant To cover Operating Room duties as assigned.
To respond to any adverse occurrences e.g. injuries, falls, sudden illnesses etc, suffered by patients, visitors or staff.
To take clinical responsibility for junior NCHDs such as SHOs and Interns.
Participate in audits and research To assist in the education of colleagues, Medical Students and staff by participating in tutorials and teaching sessions.
Engage in technological developments as they apply to the patient and service administration To contribute to quality improvement; risk management initiatives and policy development so that the overall Surgical Service is of the highest quality and reflective of best practice.
To act and behave professionally and perform one's duties in a manner that optimises patient care and protects and enhances the reputation of Beacon Hospital.
To adhere to Hospital Policies and Procedures e.g. JCI, Code Blue, infection control, work hours and overtime.
To comply with Health and Safety Regulations, ensuring safe working practices in a safe working environment.
To undertake any other duties that may be required, which could include assisting medical colleagues throughout the hospital.
Education and Training : Beacon Hospital is a UCD affiliate Teaching Hospital.
To assist in the education and training of students attending clinical placement.
To provide, when possible, tutorials to students on his/her rotation speciality.
To encourage and engage with, students to attend ward rounds and MDTS in their relevant speciality.
To facilitate students observing his/her practice as required by the Beacon Hospital Academy.
To support the School of Medicine Clinical Tutors by identifying patients suitable for student assessment.
To support Interns who are on three-month rotations with the hospital.
To regularly meet with the speciality specific intern and address the interns learning needs.
To act as a mentor to the intern and guide the intern in terms of professional development appropriate for their stage of training.
To support other NCHDs in the hospital by participating in NCHD teaching sessions.
Person Specification Qualifications MRCS or equivalent desirable Current relevant Irish Medical Council Registration.
Experience At least one years' experience at Registrar level in an acute Hospital setting Preferable to have experience with teaching, quality improvement cycle engagement and robotic surgery Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge BLS certification required.
Personal Competencies Proven ability to work as an effective team member.
Ability to communicate effectively.
All posts in Beacon Hospital require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service.
Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager or hospital management.
