Dublin Zoo holds the prestigious position of being ‘Ireland’s leading Fee-Paying Family Attraction’, welcoming over 1.2 million visitors annually.

We are seeking a highly motivated and diligent Animal Keeper to join our animal management team. The role involves supporting Team Leaders and Senior Keepers to ensure effective and timely animal husbandry, following the best standard practices.
The Keeper will be a hands-on team member responsible for husbandry, diets, habitat maintenance, cleanliness, and environmental enrichment of their assigned section. Additional responsibilities may apply depending on grade.
The role requires adherence to world’s best practices, compliance with Health and Safety regulations, and maintaining high standards in animal care. A good understanding of health and safety, research, conservation, and modern zoo practices in animal husbandry, diets, and enrichment is essential.
This is a 6-month fixed-term contract role to cover maternity leave.
Key Responsibilities
1. Animals: Know and observe animals, identify behavioral, reproductive, and medical issues, and keep staff informed. Prepare and distribute diets, report health concerns, perform husbandry procedures, and provide enrichment and training.
2. Habitats, Houses, and Facilities: Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and safety of animal habitats and facilities. Conduct minor repairs and suggest improvements.
3. Staff: Assist in training staff and students, supervise work, and ensure safety and performance standards.
4. Others: Follow work practices, policies, and protocols. Be willing to participate in first aid duties.
5. Working Relationships: Collaborate effectively with team members, build good relations across departments, and interact respectfully with visitors.
6. Reporting: Complete daily reports, maintain data in ZIMS, communicate with managers, and participate in section meetings and public talks.
Requirements
* Relevant animal-related qualification (DMZAA or equivalent) with at least 2 years’ post-qualification experience.
* Minimum of 3 years relevant animal keeping experience.
* Good knowledge of animals, natural history, and ongoing learning.
* High standards of work, adaptability, and ability to assist veterinary teams.
* Effective communication, leadership by example, and minor repair skills.
* Proactive problem-solving, computer literacy (ZIMS), and report writing skills.
* Physical fitness, good attendance, and flexible working hours.
* Commitment to excellent customer service and operational support across departments.
