This Work Placement Experience Programme provides Participants with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, learning and training while on the programme. This programme is for jobseekers who are in receipt of qualifying social welfare payments and those transferring from a social welfare scheme or an ETB Training Allowance. Your eligibility will be verified by the Department as part of the application process.
Job Description
The Decent Cigar Emporium offers a valuable work placement opportunity for individuals interested in gaining hands‑on experience in Ireland’s only hand‑rolled premium cigar specialist store. Participants will develop practical skills and gain unique insight into the day‑to‑day operations and standards required to support a high‑end retail environment. The successful candidate will receive ongoing support and supervision within the retail space to help optimise the experience and develop key skills. A standard day will vary as they gain more knowledge and grow in the role, with structured learning opportunities provided throughout.
Most days will start with setting up and preparing the space for the day ahead, ensuring cleanliness and presentation, and maintaining the goods. Guidance and mentoring will be provided to ensure best practice is learned and applied. Following this, stock takes, checks and quality controls will be conducted under supervision. With such a high‑end specialised product, there is a strong focus on training the candidate in maintaining high levels of control and management at all times.
Monitoring and updating our online shop during the weekday will also be taught as part of the routine. This includes updating orders, online stock management and designing/uploading new content, with step‑by‑step support and instruction. Throughout the day, the successful applicant will shadow experienced staff to learn how to properly service clients and pack orders to specification. A key focus will be on monitoring safe delivery processes and upholding high standards of presentation and aesthetics.
Role Description
This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.
Formal Training
Enrolment in The Cigar Academy online programme, covering tobacco cultivation, industry knowledge, and product expertise, with the opportunity to gain a recognised diploma.
Initial structured instruction in core areas such as point‑of‑sale systems, stock control, and online retail operations.
