Health Care Assistant – Peri‑Operative

Overview
The Healthcare Assistant (Peri-operative Care) is a member of the surgical team assisting in the care of patients undergoing surgical intervention and procedural sedation.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Assist in the preparation and checking of theatre equipment per list and activity.
* Work as a 2nd assistant to the surgeon assisting with surgical intervention as directed.
* Complete check lists to ensure equipment and instrumentation are available and fit for purpose.
* Manage stock, including replenishing sterile supplies and ensuring proper rotation.
* Assist with the safe transfer of patients within the peri‑operative setting, including inter‑departmental transfers.
* Assist in positioning of patients and use of appropriate pressure‑relieving aids.
* Collect and receive specimens from surgical/anaesthetic team, correctly label, package and requisition prior to transport to specimen area.
* Prepare and open sterile packs, instrument sets, sundries and pour lotions.
* Position relevant theatre equipment.
* Assist with gowning and gloving of theatre and medical staff.
* Ensure items for disposal are correctly bagged/binned and ready for waste collection per policy.
* Clean equipment surfaces following infection control policies.
* Report any faults of fabric, furniture or equipment.
* Undertake any other duties within scope of the post as agreed with theatre manager.
Endoscopy Support
* Support the RGN in delivering effective and efficient patient care.
* Understand information handling during endoscopy service delivery.
* Prepare endoscopy area including wash room.
* Ensure all endoscopes and supporting equipment are available and fit for purpose.
* Ensure consumables are available.
* Assist in positioning patients and use of appropriate pressure‑relieving aids.
* Be familiar with pre‑cleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning, storage and transportation of endoscopes.
Qualifications & Experience
* Relevant FETAC/QQI Level 5 Qualification.
* At least 1 year experience in a customer‑focused environment within the healthcare sector.
* Previous experience as a Health Care Assistant working within the peri‑operative setting.
* Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills.
* Strong communication skills.
