Position Description
The Network Designer (Engineering Officer) is responsible for providing safe network designs within your discipline. These design packs will be used by ESB Networks staff and/or contractors as per Work Programs to carry out work safely on the Electricity Network. The designs shall be carried out in line with relevant standards set down by ESB Network Assets and adhering to Company Standards. Depending upon the specific role assignment, this design work can be related to domestic, commercial, and industrial new or increased customer connections. Additionally, the design work may be associated with the Capital Work Programmes including line design from LV to 38kV and underground design.
All design work must be completed promptly and in accordance with ESB design standards & guidelines, ensuring compliance with ESB Networks Customer Charter standards. The role includes managing your own design workload. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently but also as part of a larger design team, following schedules set by their design manager.
Key Responsibilities
* Preparing high-quality designs; calculating costs; preparing capital approvals, work authorizations, protection settings, design drawings; measuring design clearances for 38kV, MV, and LV networks, including use of all associated IT systems
* Preparing scopes of work, costing templates, and safety documentation
* Recording and updating the Distribution Network on relevant IT systems
* Maintaining a commercial focus by preparing least-cost, technically acceptable designs
* Liaising and negotiating with Local Authorities, landowners, and other parties to obtain routes for underground cables and overhead lines, in accordance with legislation and ESB policies
* Ensuring compliance with legislation and ESB Policy in obtaining landowner consent, including issuing wayleaves
* Arranging cable easements, forestry easements, and road opening and closure licenses as needed. Applying for and processing Road Opening Licenses
* Following ESB’s Code of Ethics “Our Code”
* Processing Site Acquisition and Planning Permission applications as required
* Managing own design workload as agreed with the relevant Design Manager
* Delivering excellent customer service in line with ESB Networks Customer Charter
* Participating in the scheduling of construction work
* Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation
* Fulfilling the role of Designer under Construction Regulations
* Gaining and maintaining extensive knowledge of HV / MV / LV Electrical Networks, depending on specific area of work and expertise
* Supporting the planning and execution of construction and maintenance work programs as needed
* Utilizing IT systems such as SAP IWM, EPlan, SAP FMIS, Excel, etc.
Experience and Qualifications
* Advanced Level 6 Electrical Trade Certificate, 3rd Level qualification, or equivalent work experience
* A full clean driving license
* Ability to translate scope and policy requirements into feasible designs
* Ability to implement standards and policies to ensure optimal design
* Knowledge of ESB network assets; Substations, Lines, Cables, Protection, and Metering
* Minimum of 3 years relevant experience
* Knowledge of ESB IT systems
* Understanding and application of relevant Quality Management standards in ESB Networks
Location
This position will be based in Athlone or Longford. Applicants not located in these areas are encouraged to apply.

All arrangements are subject to manager approval and ongoing review based on operational needs.
Reporting to
The successful candidate will report to the relevant Design Manager, Delivery Assurance, Network Customer & Project Delivery.
