Senior Automation Project Engineer – 12 Month Contract (Athlone) | Competitive Hourly Rates
We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer for a 12-month contract role based in Athlone, offering competitive hourly rates. This position is ideal for professionals with a strong background in automated control systems within the life sciences or pharmaceutical sector.
Job Responsibilities
* Ensure strict adherence to GxP procedures across all aspects of the role.
* Manage and execute automation change controls.
* Support the identification and implementation of system improvements and corrective actions.
* Coach operators and maintenance technicians on effective use of control systems.
* Oversee the specification, development, installation, and validation of automation projects, with direct responsibility for control systems.
* Lead technical discussions with project teams, provide support, and make informed decisions on hardware and architecture selection.
* Collaborate with OEM teams to design, develop, and test PLC code in line with site coding standards.
* Fine-tune PLC code during testing and development phases, conduct system testing, and troubleshoot to resolve issues.
* Deliver controls aspects of projects on schedule and within budget.
* Assess existing technologies and processes; research and implement new control technologies.
* Coordinate and manage controls elements during equipment build and debug.
* Work with cross-functional teams to ensure timely project delivery to required quality standards.
* Manage subcontractors and vendors as part of project delivery.
* Represent the client during qualification and testing of vendor-provided systems.
Job Requirements
* Third-level qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
* Minimum 5 years' experience with automated control systems, preferably in the life sciences or pharmaceutical sector.
* Strong knowledge of Siemens PLC platforms (e.g., TIA Portal, WinCC).
* Proficiency in PLC programming languages such as ladder logic, function block diagram (FBD), and structured text (ST).
* Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g., ProfiNet, Profibus, Modbus) and networking concepts.
* Experience with HMI/SCADA systems (e.g., Ignition, WinCC, Intouch).
* Familiarity with cybersecurity principles for securing SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, GMP, GAMP) related to automation and control systems in the life sciences industry.
* Understanding of GAMP software development lifecycle, ANSI/ISA-S88 and S95 industry standards, and 21 CFR Part 11.
