Marsh McLennan Ireland is seeking talented individuals for an exciting opportunity to fulfil a fixed term (maternity leave cover) Legal Counsel role within its high-performing Legal, Compliance and Public Affairs team.
You will become a member of the Legal Department supporting the Mercer and Marsh businesses in Ireland, working closely with local and regional members of the Legal, Compliance and Public Affairs team and colleagues in the wider Marsh McLennan business to provide a high-quality legal and varied service.
The role will primarily focus on commercial matters but may also include the management of disputes involving the companies, project and regulatory work in areas such as financial services, insurance broking, investment management, consulting and pension administration and trusts.
It will suit a lawyer from a commercial background wishing to develop their in-house skillset and take ownership of key commercial negotiations.
Report to: Head of Legal, Compliance and Public Affairs, Ireland
Team Size: 4 in Ireland, within a larger European Legal Department
We will rely on you to:
Draft and negotiate contracts and other legal documents with clients, vendors and third parties.
Maintain a docket of active and potential disputes, guide investigations, set case strategy, negotiate settlements, and supervise external counsel.
Be a key legal adviser on projects across the Irish business.
Actively participate in development of new propositions and projects to respond to regulatory change.
Provide advice on legal issues and developments, legal risk, relevant regulatory issues as well as policy drafting.
Support ongoing regulatory initiatives across the business.
Assist with knowhow, template and self-help tool development for Department and the business.
Effectively prioritise work and manage time.
Communicate regularly with internal business colleagues regarding projected timeframes.
Escalate key issues for decision or information using appropriate judgement as to when to do so.
What you will need to have:
Qualifications & Experience
Holds a current practising certificate from Ireland or other common law jurisdiction.
Minimum 2-3 +years PQE.
Strong commercial contracts experience.
Skills
Effectively prioritize work by understanding competing priorities and make appropriate judgments regarding relative importance.
Manage time efficiently; use appropriate judgment in determining how much time to spend on a project or matter.
Legal document drafting skills.
Take the initiative; identify areas for enhanced efficiency and issues that go beyond the specific project requested by the internal client.
Team player and able to work effectively within a small team.
Excellent attention to detail and organization skills.
Communications
Be able to clearly articulate and educate business colleagues on key legal and regulatory issues and developments.
Confident in explaining and defending advice given with the ability to take risk-based decisions.
Manage expectations well; communicate regularly with internal business colleagues regarding projected timeframe for project completion.
Able to facilitate and embrace team culture and diversity.

Experience in Irish Financial Services and/or Pensions Law & Regulation would be a bonus but is not necessary.
