Role/Department:
As the Pre-Approval Controlled Function ("PCF") Head of Internal Audit (PCF-13), subject to Central Bank of Ireland ("CBI") approval, the individual will be responsible for executing the day-to-day Head of Internal Audit responsibilities for the Northern Trust Company Ireland Branch* (*subject to CBI authorisation). This role combines strategic leadership of the audit activities for TNTC-IB with deep subject matter expertise in payments, responsible to lead and execute complex audits focused on payment systems, processes, and controls across the Northern Trust organization.
The ideal candidate will have extensive internal audit experience, having worked in a senior internal audit role within a credit institution with a deep knowledge of payment ecosystems, regulatory frameworks, and industry best practices. The role holder can be based in either Northern Trusts Dublin or Limerick offices.
This role is designated as a Material Risk Taker
The key responsibilities of the role include:
* Execution of the day-to-day Head of Internal Audit responsibilities for TNTC-IB in accordance with the PCF-13 Statement of Responsibilities, including the development of the TNTC-IB Audit Universe and the risk-based annual internal audit plan
* Overseeing the execution of the approved plan, and adjusting the plan as needed in response to changes in the legal entity business risks, operations, programs, systems, and controls, ensuring that audits are conducted in accordance with internal and professional standards
* Communicating and reporting internal audit results clearly and constructively to stakeholders at all levels, including to the TNTC-IB Management Committee and Senior Management Team
* Executing a program of continuous monitoring to ensure continued awareness of risks and risk themes affecting TNTC-IB including, at a minimum: attendance at relevant risk governance forums, regular meetings with first- and second-line management, participation in industry councils and continuous assessment of the impacting regulatory and legislative landscape
* Engaging with regulators, including provision of requested internal audit documentation as part of supervisory activity, where requested
* Submission of relevant internal audit reports to the CBI in line with prescribed timelines
* Designing and maintaining a payments audit coverage plan for the wider Northern Trust payments environment, ensuring audit coverage addresses end-to-end payment flows, including authorization, clearing/settlement, reconciliation, fraud prevention, and operational resilience
* Monitoring and updating the payments audit coverage plan to reflect changes in payment technologies, regulatory developments, and business priorities.
* Overseeing the execution of payment-focused audits, ensuring adherence to audit methodology and quality standards
Skills / Qualifications:
The successful candidate will benefit from having:
* Extensive experience in internal audit leadership roles within financial services with advanced knowledge of internal audit principles
* Deep knowledge of financial services payment ecosystems, regulatory frameworks, and industry best practices
* Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and stakeholder management skills including effective business writing and presentations
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence at board and executive levels.
* A Professional certification (CPA, CISA, CIA, ACA, ACCA)
Note: This role will be subject to the Senior Executive Accountability Regime (SEAR), which imposes a legal Duty of Responsibility on persons carrying out this Pre-Approval Controlled Function (PCF) role.
