ROLE PURPOSE
Your primary function is to ensure the theatre teams deliver effective patient care by providing excellent clinical and managerial leadership, within available resources and budgetary objectives.
This is presently comprised of 6 operating rooms, and the decontamination unit.
The Nurse Manager will manage, plan, organise and co-coordinate all services relating to both direct and indirect care within the theatres.
QUALIFICATIONS
Registered in the general division of Nursing and Midwifery Board Ireland
Category 2 Qualification in Operating Theatre Technique
Have experience in an acute hospital with operating theatres
Have a management qualification relevant to the post
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Professional
1.1
Providing a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
1.2
Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based approach to ensure clinical effectiveness and efficiency.
1.3
Monitor the quality of service delivery and provide professional advice and guidance.
1.4
Ensure all documentation is complete and appropriate information is given to patients.
1.5
Evaluate and develop, lead and manage the implementation of best practice policy and procedures within the operating theatres.
1.6
Provide appropriate reports to Matron and others as required.
1.7
Monitor complaints and work with quality and risk manager.
1.8
Participate in quality improvement initiatives to improve patient satisfaction.
1.9
To lead the infection control agenda within the operating theatres.
2. Managerial
2.1
Provide leadership and direction to nursing personnel and others under your control by:
2.2
Scheduling unit personnel in a manner that promotes optimal use of staff, taking into account annual leave, sickness, absences etc.
2.3
Allocating nursing and support staff in an appropriate manner to meet the workload and ensuring continuity of care whilst operating within allocated resources.
2.4
Participating in the recruitment and selection of personnel, appropriate to the needs of the department.
2.5

Monitoring absence and ensure proper procedures are adhered to.
2.7
Ensure staff attend all mandatory training according to hospital policy.
2.8
Promote and nurture a high level of staff morale, thereby promoting team spirit and job satisfaction among nursing staff and other staff in the unit.
2.9
Maintaining flexible schedules to be available to staff on all shifts.
3. Management of the Operation Theatres
3.1
Maintain an environment that encourages quality patient care and staff satisfaction by:
3.2
Exercising leadership by personal example.
3.3
Delegating professional duties to staff recognising the professional competency of individuals.
3.4
Accepting responsibility by deputising for Matron as indicated and to work as part of the senior nursing team.
3.5
Collaborating with hospital personnel and other healthcare providers in planning care and making appropriate referrals.
3.6
Making recommendations relative to improving patient care and staff requirement to the appropriate administrative personnel.
3.7
Supporting and interpreting clinical policies and procedures.
3.8
Organising regular unit meetings and team briefings with the staff.
3.9
Providing a safe, clean, comfortable and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
3.10
Maintaining effective communication networks within the unit and departments throughout the hospital.
3.11
Serving on committees within the hospital as appropriate.
3.12
Lead the accreditation process within the operating theatre and decontamination unit
4. Educational and Self Development Responsibilities
Provide for the professional growth and development of nursing staff by:
4.1
The assessment and identification of training and development needs for nursing staff within the unit by setting objectives for learning and contribution to the development of training programmes where appropriate.
4.2
Identify teaching and learning opportunities within the unit.
4.3
Ensure that student nurse educational requirements are met.
Supervise and assess students undertaking adaptation or work experience to foster a learning environment.
4.4
Assume responsibility for identifying own educational needs and upgrade deficient areas through independent study, seminar attendance or requesting staff development programmes.
4.5
Evaluate own nursing practice and instruction of others and the effect these have on the quality of patient care.
4.6
Identify appropriate skill mix for the Department and support this where appropriate.
