R&D & Moulding Technician – 12 month fixed term contract (Cork)
We are recruiting a R&D & Moulding Technician on a 12 month fixed term contract in Cork. The main responsibility is to support and drive R&D Engineering activities including specification, procurement, installation, validation and implementation of new equipment and moulding & mold tooling for the development and manufacture of new products or processes at the Alcon Ireland site. You will also support the maintenance of R&D Engineering Group equipment such as moulding, curing, metrology, cleaning, chemical process and packaging systems.
Typical day-to-day responsibilities
Assist R&D Engineering in the specification, design and procurement of new equipment.
Support R&D Engineering process development, characterization and optimisation activities.
Assist in all aspects of validation document generation and execution (risk assessments, validation assessments and execution of commissioning/validation documents).
Maintain R&D Engineering equipment and utilities equipment.
Set up & plan tooling changes for R&D moulding machines, inclusive of preventative maintenance.
Assemble, build and install new equipment at the site and identify/set up spare parts for new or existing equipment.
Liaise with suppliers/external contractors to obtain quotations, method statements & risk assessments and coordinate onsite activities of contract personnel.
Provide first‑response technical support to all R&D Engineering process and utilities equipment.
Report daily to the supervisor/project engineer on all activities, highlighting concerns early.
Achieve assigned project milestones for R&D Engineering activities on time and within budget.
Support safety risk assessments for any new equipment and/or processes introduced.
Investigate and document process issues and report findings and solutions to Engineering.
Ensure continual quality system compliance by adhering to established and evolving Alcon QS requirements.
Ensure all work adheres to H&S and environmental requirements.
What you will bring to Alcon
Level 7 qualification in an Engineering or Technical discipline.
Minimum of 3 – 5 years’ experience in a similar technical role in the Medical Device Industry (preferred 5+ years).
Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment issues.
Familiarity with robotics, PLCs and vision systems.
Technical competence in operating and repairing highly automated equipment.
Good understanding of networks and basic troubleshooting skills.
Familiarity with Veeva, Maximo and Teamcenter.
Ability to work independently and take initiative.
Good problem‑solving skills and a structured approach.
Knowledge of ISO, FDA, GMP standards.
