Principle Duties and Responsibilities
The Dietitian, Clinical Specialist – Renal will:
Professional and Clinical
* Assess and treat a wide range of clinical presentations relevant to renal patients.
* Develop, implement, and monitor nutritional care plans based on patient assessments.
* Organize, provide, and evaluate nutrition and dietetic services for renal patients at UHW.
* Create evidence-based nutritional care pathways for renal patients, including inpatient, outpatient, and follow-up care, integrating with community and other healthcare services.
* Participate in ward rounds and safety meetings for interdisciplinary communication.
* Manage patient caseloads according to departmental needs.
* Prioritize workload and manage resources effectively.
* Provide cover during absences and lead the service during such times.
* Manage clinical risks within your caseload and team.
* Maintain high standards of dietetic assessment and management, adhering to professional standards.
* Lead and support your team, fostering change and service improvement.
* Lead projects within the Nutrition and Dietetics Department.
* Ensure high standards of clinical practice and provide expert advice to colleagues and other health professionals.
* Engage in quality improvement, audit, and research initiatives.
* Collaborate with catering regarding therapeutic diets.
* Develop local policies and care pathways in line with national policies, guidelines, and consultations.
* Participate in relevant committees and promote best practices in nutrition and dietetics.
* Respect patient privacy and dignity at all times.
Education and Development
* Provide leadership and supervision to senior and staff grade dietitians.
* Contribute to the education of colleagues and students in renal services.
* Identify and pursue personal and professional development needs.
* Stay updated with scientific research and practice developments.
* Participate in CPD and promote staff development.
* Implement performance management and objective setting.
* Disseminate clinical guidelines and produce educational resources.
* Act as a resource regionally and nationally.
* Oversee practice education for student dietitians.
Health & Safety
* Work safely, adhering to health and safety legislation.
* Coordinate with management to ensure safe service delivery.
* Promote a safe working environment and participate in risk management.
* Report incidents and hazards appropriately.
* Follow policies regarding equipment safety.
Management
* Set and monitor performance standards and KPIs.
* Develop innovative care models and collaborate on strategic planning.
* Analyze service demands and develop team capacity, including extended hours.
* Negotiate service delivery plans and monitor activity levels.
* Manage daily operations, staffing, and workloads.
* Implement change initiatives to maintain service quality.
* Collect and analyze data for research and resource planning.
* Ensure proper documentation and compliance with data protection standards.
* Maintain awareness of HIQA standards and ensure compliance.
* Support sustainability initiatives within the service.
