Job title: Assistant Director of Nursing, WTE 1.0 - 37.5hrs Reports to: Director of Nursing Description of the hospital The Royal Hospital Donnybrook is a 178 bedded hospital that provides Post-Acute, Stroke Rehabilitation, Neurorehabilitation and General Rehabilitation services, Day Hospital services, Respite and Residential Care services to adults. Purpose of the post The role of the Assistant Director of Nursing is to support the Director of Nursing in the promotion of excellence in clinical care and practice across the hospital. To provide professional leadership and advice while managing all aspects of nursing services. The post holder will support the Director of Nursing in progressing the clinical governance agenda within the context of integrated governance, ensuring the hospital provides care of the highest quality. Core duties and responsibilities: Ensure adherence to standards and guidelines relating to professional nursing practice and behaviour in accordance with NMBI Provide direct support and assistance to management in the implementation of the Safer Better Healthcare Standards. The ADON has a pivotal role in co-ordination and management of activity and resources within the Clinical Managed Area. Participate in site audits and a review of services as required. Develop and lead out on Quality, Safety and Risk System.. Take a lead role in the Nursing Department in the development, implementation, and evaluation of policy documents for clinical practice, education, and professional standards. Accept responsibility for own professional development and be aware of current trends and strategies in nursing and healthcare. Formulate, implement, and evaluate service plans in co-operation with multi-disciplinary teams. Develop a shared sense of commitment and participation among staff in the management of change, in developing the nursing services in keeping with evidence-based practice and in response to changing patient and health care needs. Evaluate the systems of nursing care delivery and recommend changes in nursing procedures, practices, and policies in order to reflect an evidence-based practice approach to service delivery. Be actively involved in and support continuous quality improvement initiatives including clinical audit and complaints management. Provide effective and innovative leadership, support, and advice to nursing and allied staff at all levels. Foster good employee relations and promote excellent communication among nursing staff and their interdisciplinary colleagues. Deal with relevant IR and HR issues relating to Nursing and support staff in consultation with the Director of Nursing. Assist the Director of Nursing with the preparation of annual estimates of nursing and related workforce, including education and training needs. In conjunction with Unit Managers, ensure that nursing and support services expenditure both pay, and non-pay is controlled within budget and identify potential for effectiveness through improved practice and innovation. Actively participate in the hospitals risk management programme and support Unit Managers to assess and mange risks within their area of responsibility. Contribute to the provision of a safe environment for all staff, patients and visitors and be familiar with the Health and Safety at Work regulations. Actively participate in various committees and working groups as requested by the Director of Nursing. Conduct such other functions as may be required by the Director of Nursing from time to time. Deputise for the Director of Nursing in his/her absence and provide cross cover for the other Assistant Director of Nursing as required. Qualifications and experience Applicants must, as a minimum, on the closing date for receipt of completed applications: Be registered in the General Division of NMBI Have at least 5 years post registration experience., of which 3 years must be at CNM2 level or above. Provide evidence of continuing professional development. Have experience in the care of older people and/or people with disabilities. Demonstrate experience in Nursing Management at a level appropriate to the post of Assistant Director of Nursing. Possess a post graduate qualification in either gerontology, dementia, stroke, healthcare management or another related field relevant to the role. A successful candidate who does not possess a healthcare management qualification will be required to complete one within two years of taking up post.
