Full‑time Staff Nurse – Day Ward – UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin

Overview of role
The Staff Nurse will be responsible for a caseload of patients, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. The nurse will practice within the Code of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by An Bord Altranais and comply with all policies and procedures of the Sports Surgery Clinic. The nurse will report to the Clinical Nurse Manager 1 (or delegated CNM in absence) and practice within the limits of their experience.
The Day Ward Nurse must understand and commit to the ethos and philosophy of the Sports Surgery Clinic.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain awareness of the primacy of the patient in all clinical activities and uphold a high standard of nursing care.
Create and promote healthy working relationships.
Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the Clinic.
Ensure each patient is treated as an individual and that privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
Participate actively in the Clinic’s Accreditation programme and continuous quality improvement.
Implement and evaluate care programmes to meet individual patient needs, adjusting nursing care orders accordingly.
Exercise appropriate professional judgement in clinical issues.
Record accurate and comprehensive treatment and nursing records and audit.
Co‑operate with and assist medical staff in patient care.
Provide a visible clinical presence at all times and respond to situations such as cardiac arrest.
Maintain safe practice for patient care pre‑ and post‑operatively.
Deliver safe, comprehensive nursing care to patients within the guidelines laid out by An Bord Altranais.
Support and supervise care assistants and other support staff in their duties to the required standard.
Ensure all staff practice nursing in accordance with the professional code set by An Bord Altranais.
Communicate effectively with Clinical Nurse Managers, Nursing Administration, patients and relatives.
Maintain a professional standard of behaviour at all times and support the leadership of the Director of Nursing and Clinical Nurse Manager.
Promote good relationships with key clinic staff through attitudes that show understanding of the Clinic’s broader function.
Adhere to Clinic policies regarding grievance, disciplinary matters and health and safety.
Participate in clinical audit projects to improve patient care quality.
Exercise the An Bord Altranais code of conduct.
Keep abreast of clinical and professional developments by demonstrating evidence of ongoing professional development.
Assist the Clinical Nurse Manager with formal and informal teaching of nursing staff including care assistants.
Mentor junior staff, ensuring they meet learning objectives and receive adequate supervision.
Participate in induction and guidance of new staff to the clinic.
Teach nursing procedures to postgraduate student nurses.
Supervise junior nursing staff to enable attainment of potential and responsibility for delegated duties.
Identify learning needs of staff and provide teaching opportunities to promote continued education.
Attend and participate in in‑service programmes when appropriate.
Stay current with developments in nursing practice and education.
Report faulty mechanical equipment to the Clinical Nurse Manager.
Manage theatre incidents and accidents per Clinic policy and accurately record and report details.
Communicate with theatre and other departments to ensure continuity of patient care and safe patient transfer.
Stay informed of all relevant policies, including Health and Safety Policy, to maintain a safe working environment.
Maintain safe custody of controlled drugs according to clinic policy.
Consult with other nursing teams to ensure efficient and effective service.
Act as a full member of the Nursing Team in the clinical area.
Positively participate in change management and development initiatives.
Attend meetings and sit on committees as required.
Use knowledge, judgement and experience to develop ways of handling crisis situations for patient and staff.
Report accidents and incidents as per clinic policy.
Observe and uphold daily cleaning standards and report inadequacies to the Clinical Nurse Manager.
Promote, nurture and maintain a high level of staff morale, fostering team spirit and job satisfaction among nursing and other theatre staff.
Deputise for the CNM 1 as required.
Actively contribute to clinical risk management processes.
Qualifications & Experience
Registered Nurse, eligible to register with An Bord Altranais on the General Division of the live register.
Recognised Orthopaedic Course or Orthopaedic experience is desirable.
Ideal Candidate
Has managed patient care ensuring the highest professional standards using an evidence‑based and care planning approach.
Is computer literate.
Has the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage multiple issues simultaneously, demonstrating attention to detail.
Has excellent interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication abilities.
Can identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.
Is free from any defect or disease that would render them unsuitable to hold office and is in a state of health indicating a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Has good character.

Remuneration
Salary: €39,101.00 – €59,074.00 per annum based on a 37.5 hour working week. Incremental credit will apply.
