We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Director of Nursing to join the team in Kilkenny Care Centre.


Position Overview

The post of Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is a senior clinical position which reports to the Director of Nursing. The role will be responsible for providing clinical leadership, managing the day‑to‑day clinical practices in the home, appropriate staff rostering, delegation and supervision, performance and development, clinical governance and assessment of risks. The ADON will work collaboratively with the DON and Healthcare Manager as part of the senior management team in the nursing home, providing clear communication and direction and deputising for the DON as required. The position reports to the Director of Nursing / Person in Charge.


Duties and Responsibilities

* Clinical Practice
o Ensure the delivery of the highest standards of nursing and social care which meet the individual needs of each resident.
o Ensure home policies and expected clinical standards are read, understood and practised at all times.
o Conduct ward rounds (including those with GP) to ensure best clinical outcomes are achieved.
o Review nursing documentation to ensure it reflects the care and treatment required by each resident and that assessments and care plans are completed appropriately within agreed timeframes and reviewed as required.
o Review residents at increased risk of pressure sores, falls and other adverse events, and those who are clinically unwell, providing advice, support and assistance through clinical practices and documentation so as to ensure appropriate management plan is in place.
o Participate in handover and troubleshoot ongoing clinical issues; escalating to DON as appropriate.
o Ensure medication practices are carried out according to An Bord Altranais guidelines and the recommended practice in the nursing home, and liaise with GPs and pharmacy regarding medication reviews and audit. Ensure all nursing staff are competent in medication management and that education on medication management practices is provided during induction.
o Undertake regular MAMS medicines audits and ensure effective feedback and action plans are undertaken and reviewed.
* Staff Supervision & Education
o Support CNMs and provide direction, mentorship and regular communication.
o Maintain visible presence in the clinical areas, monitor practice in relation to care practices and give constructive feedback.
o Establish a team dynamic and ensure cohesive planning and improvement of care.
o Carry out regular performance appraisals and professional development objectives with staff.
o Train and induct nursing and care staff.
o Assess education needs and deliver in‑house training: infection control, palliative and end‑of‑life care, challenging behaviour, elder abuse.
o Communicate regularly with staff and develop team ethos.
o Participate in staff interviews and reviews as appropriate.
o Produce roster and manage temporary/agency staff, ensuring compliance with staffing levels.
* Auditing
o Conduct clinical audits and review resident documentation.
o Monitor cleanliness and hygiene standards.
o Carry out environmental and hand hygiene audits and ensure action plans are implemented.
o Conduct medication, health & safety audits, risk assessments and drawing up risk management plans with DON.
o Audit EpicCare and address documentation issues with CNMs, staff nurses and carers.
* Resident/Relative Person Centred
o Interact with and support residents and families daily; key point of contact in conjunction with DON.
o Deal with complaints swiftly and document and follow up as required.
o Assist and liaise with multidisciplinary team, relatives and families.
* Management and Communication
o Responsible for day‑to‑day clinical practices; responsible for the home in DON’s absence.
o Maintain open, honest and clear communication with senior management, direct reports and staff.
o Ensure care delivered is of high quality; staff are skilled, competent, caring and conscientious.
o Act as team leader and role model of excellent nursing care and practice.
o Supervise staff, monitor drug rounds, manage clinical issues and obtain crucial information on day‑to‑day issues.
* Daily Activities
o Check staff rosters and cover absences.
o Communicate clearly to staff, residents and relatives.
o Attend handovers and review resident progress.
o Support and develop clinical practice hands‑on with nurses and carers.
o Implement company health and safety policy.

Qualifications

* First level registration.
* Registered on appropriate part of Irish live register.
* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* Previous management experience.
