Job Purpose
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent plays a key role in maintaining and presenting the golf course to the highest possible standards. This is a handson greenkeeping position focused on daily course setup, fine turf management, and supporting the wider maintenance programme. The role involves operating and maintaining turf machinery, assisting with bunker and irrigation work, and working closely with the Course Superintendent to deliver excellent playing conditions for members and guests.
This position is suited to someone with a passion for turf care and sports surfaces, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively as part of a professional and supportive team.
Role Responsibilities
Daily Course SetUp & Presentation
* Carry out daily course setup tasks, including pin positions, tee markers, and hazard checks.
* Ensure the course is presented to championship standards for members, guests, and tournaments.
* Monitor turf and playing surfaces, reporting issues to the Golf Course Superintendent.
Fine Turf & Grounds Maintenance
* Undertake mowing, rolling, aeration, topdressing, and overseeding as required.
* Maintain greens, tees, fairways, and surrounds to the highest agronomic standards.
* Support seasonal renovation and improvement programmes.
Machinery Operation & Upkeep
* Safely operate and maintain a variety of turf care machinery and equipment.
* Carry out basic maintenance and checks on machinery to ensure reliable operation.
* Report any machinery faults or safety issues promptly.
Irrigation & Bunker Maintenance
* Assist with irrigation system monitoring, operation, and repairs.
* Undertake bunker edging, raking, and sand distribution to maintain playability and presentation.
* Support drainage and water management work when required.
Teamwork & Collaboration
* Work as part of a professional and supportive greenkeeping team.
* Support colleagues on large projects, renovations, and tournament preparations.
* Contribute positively to a team culture based on pride, quality, and professionalism.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
* Follow all health & safety procedures, ensuring safe use of machinery, equipment, and materials.
* Adhere to environmental and sustainability practices in turf care.
* Maintain clean, safe, and organised working areas.
Preferred Experience & Skills
* Previous experience in greenkeeping, sports turf, or fine turf management.
* Strong attention to detail and pride in course presentation.
* Knowledge of turf maintenance practices, including mowing, aeration, and topdressing.
* Experience with irrigation systems and bunker maintenance an advantage.
* Full or provisional driving licence essential.
* Ability to operate turf care machinery safely and effectively.
* A strong team player with a positive, professional attitude.
* Flexibility to work early mornings, weekends, and seasonal demands.
