Research Engineer

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Advanced Energy Materials group at Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, offers a position for a Research Engineer in the project titled “Development of hybrid energy conversion system for converting waste industrial heat into electricity”.

The group specializes in energy conversion and storage materials, with a focus on thermoelectric energy technologies. We seek a highly motivated candidate with a background in modeling and experimental techniques.

Key Responsibilities and Research Objectives

Industrial processes often lose over 50% of energy as waste heat, totaling approximately 200 TWh annually in Europe. While technologies exist to convert waste heat into electricity, their adoption at the industry scale is limited due to efficiency, cost, and integration challenges. This project aims to develop a hybrid system combining thermophotovoltaics, metasurface collectors, and thermoelectric generators to enable efficient, modular energy harvesting from industrial waste heat.

The position's main focus will be:

1. Developing a computer model for the thermoelectric generator module and the INFERNO Hybrid system, including all component interactions.
2. Based on initial results, developing and characterizing the full hybrid system.

The work involves collaboration with TU Dublin, utilizing thermal characterization techniques and working closely with the team on related research topics.

Other Responsibilities

* Collaborate effectively with industrial and academic partners.
* Work independently to advance project goals.
* Disseminate findings through publications, conferences, and reports.
* Engage in training to enhance skills and career development.
* Participate in educational and public engagement activities.
* Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Quality Management and Health & Safety standards.
* Perform additional duties as required.

Essential Criteria

* Master’s degree in electrical/electronic engineering, materials, mechanical engineering, or related field.
* Approximately 5 years’ experience in thermo-mechanical and thermoelectric properties.
* Ability to work independently under tight schedules.
* Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Criteria

* Entrepreneurial experience and creative skills.
* Experience in thermo-mechanical modeling and simulation.
* Mechanical design experience or related expertise.
* Self-motivated with strong experimental skills.

Salary range: €50,799 - €62,303 per annum, based on experience and public sector pay policies.

We value entrepreneurial and creative skills, including start-up creation. For informal inquiries, contact Dr. Kafil M. Razeeb.

Application deadline: 6th June 2025, 1 pm. Please attach an updated CV and a motivation letter addressing the essential criteria.

Additional information and application details are available via the provided link. Garda vetting and police clearance may be required. Appointment is subject to university approval and employment policies.

Tyndall National Institute is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
