Title: Software Research Assistant Department: Nimbus Research Centre Contract Type: 1 Year Fixed Term Location: Bishopstown Campus, Cork Reporting to: Nimbus Gateway Manager Overview of Nimbus Research Centre The Nimbus Research Centres support for industry focuses on vertically integrated, secure, trusted digital solutions for Information Technology, Operational Technology and Internet of Things applications in areas such as Energy, Sustainability, Smart Manufacturing, Health, Smart Cities and Communities. We have a strong focus on sustainable human, societal and economic benefit across our three pillars of Research, Enterprise Engagement and Learning. Our team comprises hardware, networking, software, data analytics, machine learning, cybersecurity and systems integration experts with extensive experience in industry collaborations both in Ireland and internationally. Nimbus also hosts the Cybersecurity services of the ENTIRE European Digital Innovation Hub helping companies, in particular SMEs, start-ups, and public authorities to become more competitive by using digital technologies in their business/production processes, products, or services. The ENTIRE central office is located at the Tyndall campus in Cork, but the EDIH has locations in MTU Cork, Tralee, Waterford, and Dublin. This position will assist ENTIRE with its software requirements. Duties of the Post: The Nimbus Research Centre at MTU invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Software Research Assistant at the Nimbus Research Centre. The successful candidate will report to the Nimbus Gateway Manager. The position is based within the Nimbus Research Centre, MTU Cork campus. The successful candidate may be required to work on a hybrid model combining online remote working with on-site working. The successful candidate will work within the Nimbus Gateway software research team. Nimbus is currently involved in many applied research and investigative industrial projects. As such, we currently have a need for one motivated individual with an interest in software development to join the team. The following indicate, but not limited to, some of the principal duties and responsibilities that may be assigned: Designing, modifying, building, testing, researching frameworks, complex IT (Information Technology) environments, hybrid OT/IT environments and research testbeds. Engage in research projects into the provision of software services to industry partners including planning, organizing and analysis within the overall scope of a research project or industry engagement. Dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged. Advising on and specifying requirements for new and updated equipment. Partaking in training and professional development. Undertake such other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the University Authorities. Qualification Requirements and Selection Criteria for role: Essential: Hold an Honours Primary Degree (Second Class or higher) in Computer Science, Data Science and Analytics or equivalent discipline. Knowledge and experience of working with Python and/or other programming languages. Strong Software development and scripting skills. Ability to adapt to changing working practices. Fluent in spoken and written English Willingness to work flexible hours and travel nationally as required. Proven ability to design, build and deploy software systems. Proven ability to work with multiple frameworks and platforms. Experience in research and development. Good communicator. Understanding of the R&D process from low technical readiness levels to market ready product deployment. An understanding of the Nimbus Gateway, the Nimbus Technology Centre and the Munster Technological University. Desirable: Desirable, an MSc in computer science or equivalent with industry experience. Past experience working within an Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateway. Past experience working within a European Digital Innovation Hub (EDiH).
