Position: Mechanical Design Engineer (Intermediate/Senior Level)Location: Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, IrelandClient: Occupop (Recruiter: Bitrecruit)
Key Responsibilities
Design mechanical services installations for buildings in educational, healthcare, residential, commercial and retail sectors, including HVAC, water services, soils & wastes, gas, and building automation control systems in line with current regulations and design standards.
Demonstrate strong technical capability in all aspects of mechanical and building services engineering and design.
Create detailed mechanical design layouts, schematics, and calculations, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project objectives.
Independently address design and technical challenges to achieve optimal engineering solutions.
Work directly with clients and project engineers to define requirements and develop technical solutions.
Develop and agree on design processes and deliverables.
Produce accurate budget estimates, assess contractor progress claims and variations.
Maintain project documentation in accordance with ISO standards.
Engage in QA audits, peer reviews and technical workshops to promote continuous improvement.
Stay informed on building services and environmental sustainability design trends through seminars, CPDs and exhibitions.
Conduct site inspections and prepare related reports, sourcing budget information and providing data to project teams.
Review mechanical service submittals to ensure compliance with project objectives and approved designs.
Monitor project timelines to ensure mechanical designs are delivered on schedule and within budget.
Lead design projects, managing technical queries, design development, services coordination and timely delivery of design changes and drawing updates.
Mentor junior and intermediate engineers as required.
Assist with tender bids, including technical writing and budget preparation.
Report on project performance to the Associate Director/Director.
Key Requirements
Minimum Level 7 degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).
Ideally 5+ years of design experience with an engineering consultancy.
Proven experience in mechanical engineering design within a design office.
Ability to lead and deliver projects in accordance with building regulations and design standards.
Strong teamwork skills and ability to work independently.
Effective communication and presentation skills for client-facing roles.
Demonstrated integrity, ethics, and commitment to values.
In-depth knowledge of mechanical system designs: soils & waste, plumbing, ventilation & air conditioning, space cooling/ heating, building automation and environmental designs in Irish regulations.
Experience with ISO standards and project-specific scopes.
Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Magicad, and 3D energy modelling (IES preferred).
Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages.
Knowledge of current design guides, building regulations (incl. BCAR process), and EN standards.
Full Clean European Driver’s Licence (or in the process of obtaining one).
Proof of right to work in Ireland (EU/EEA nationals or valid work permit for non‑EU/EEA nationals).
