Commercial Underwriting Manager
Overview
An established insurance provider is seeking a Commercial Underwriting Manager to lead and develop its commercial lines division. The role will involve managing the department's operations, driving growth, ensuring compliance, and strengthening broker relationships. You MUST have experience writing P&C risks.
Key Responsibilities
* Oversee the day-to-day running of the department, including staff development, HR matters, performance management, and departmental objectives.
* Provide guidance and training to underwriting staff, acting as a referral point while promoting independent decision-making and broker engagement.
* Deliver on annual income targets, monitor loss ratios, and manage relationships with capital providers and other key stakeholders.
* Handle broker queries, monitor sales activity, and ensure consistency in the team's support of brokers.
* Drive broker engagement by increasing distribution of commercial products and building strong external relationships.
* Present departmental sales and performance updates at management meetings.
* Collaborate with marketing colleagues to raise product awareness in the broker market and generate enquiries.
* Ensure service standards are met across document flow, account queries, complaints handling, and referrals.
* Provide regular reporting on sales and underwriting performance, contribute to pricing and rating analysis, and support process improvements.
* Lead on product development, wording, pricing, and enhancements.
* Ensure full compliance with regulatory and capital provider requirements, including audits and binder obligations.
* Oversee efficient processing of new business, renewals, and mid-term adjustments.
* Advocate for system developments that improve departmental efficiency.
* Continuously review and refine processes to maintain best practice and operational effectiveness.
* Support the wider strategic direction of the business as set by senior management.
Candidate Profile
* Proven experience in commercial insurance underwriting, with strong technical knowledge across commercial lines.
* Demonstrated experience in a senior underwriting or underwriting management role.
* Strong leadership skills with a track record of motivating and developing teams.
* Commercially astute, with strong knowledge of market trends and dynamics.
* A history of delivering profitable underwriting results.
* Excellent broker relationship management and negotiation skills.
* In-depth understanding of regulatory requirements and governance within insurance.
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
* Proficiency in underwriting systems and Microsoft Office applications
