Postdoctoral Researcher – Semiconductor Devices for Power by Light

The Photonic Devices group at Tyndall National Institute is seeking a Research Scientist to join our team in developing and implementing new designs for ultra-efficient conversion of laser light to electrical power. The work is funded by Research Ireland. The devices will be based on compound (III-V) semiconductors to be grown and fabricated at Tyndall. The ideal candidate will have 2+ years (post PhD) of experience working with different compound semiconductor materials with respect to design, epitaxy, device fabrication and testing. We seek a person with drive to ultimately lead the activity on laser power transfer. Tyndall has outstanding material growth, fabrication, characterisation and test facilities to enable the research. You will join a team of highly skilled and collaborative research staff.
The Photonics Centre at Tyndall is a vibrant and expanding world-class research ecosystem comprising more than 200 researchers with activities that include photonic theory, III-V and III-Nitride material epitaxy, photonic integration, hybrid integration and packaging, microelectronics, biophotonics and communication systems. Tyndall hosts the Research Ireland Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) a €30M initiative with 30 industry partners, including large multinationals and indigenous companies and start-ups. Key Responsibilities:
* Structural design and simulation of novel III-V (GaAs, InP, GaN) photovoltaic devices
* Development of robust process flows for fabrication of the devices with appropriate risk management.
* High quality fabrication with appropriate in-line testing
* Characterising the electro-optic performance of the devices
* Disseminate research achievements through publications in leading journals and at leading conferences.
* Developing new ideas
* Participate in and support mentoring activities within the group.
* Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
* Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
* Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
* Carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria:
* PhD degree in Photonic devices, Communications, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
* 2 years experience with the processing compound semiconductor devices.
* Evident strong knowledge of device design, processing and characterisation.
* Good publication record in IEEE and/or Optica journals and conference publications.
Desirable Criteria:
* Experience with III-V epitaxy
* Previous project management experience
* Experience with Education and Public Engagement activities

Appointment may be made on the Postdoctoral Researcher €45,847 - €52,339&SeniorPostdoctoral Researcher scale€53,770- €58,479per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with the public sector pay policy.
Duration of contract is initially 12 months. Based on performance, the contract may be extended.
