Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Engineer within School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering At UCD, we're developing a novel optical tactile sensor that gives robots a human-like sense of touch enabling them to securely yet gently handle soft, fragile, or irregular objects like thin walled plastics.
This breakthrough addresses a critical need in manufacturing, medtech, agriculture, and logistics, where manual handling is common and automation is limited by damage risks.
Developed at UCD, the sensor uses deformable silicone skin and light-based force sensing to enable adaptive grip control.
Backed by strong industry interest and a PCT patent, our ultimate goal is to spin out a company that equips standard robotic arms with this game-changing technology.
The path toward achieving this goal includes answering fundamental outstanding questions about the technical and commercial viability of this technology, demonstrated in a proof of concept application.
