Location: FAI HQ Abbottstown, Dublin

Direct Reporting Line: Director of Marketing & Communications

Commencement Date: TBC

Duration: Permanent / Full-Time

Work Model: Hybrid

*this role involves considerable flexibility for international travel

Introduction

Purpose of the Role

The Head of Communications leads the development and delivery of the FAI's communications strategy, ensuring clear, consistent, and proactive messaging across all channels. This role exists to strengthen the reputation of Irish football and the FAI by driving effective media engagement, overseeing content output, and supporting organisational priorities.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with the FAI's strategic objectives
* Oversee all media relations, acting as a primary point of contact for press and managing proactive and reactive media engagement.
* Lead the planning and delivery of key announcements, campaigns, and organisational messaging across digital, press, and broadcast channels.
* Manage crisis and issues communications, ensuring timely, accurate, and consistent responses to protect and enhance the FAI's reputation.
* Supervise and support the Communications team, providing leadership, coaching, and development opportunities.
* Collaborate with internal departments to ensure consistent messaging and to maximise visibility for football programmes, competitions, and initiatives with special attention to Grassroots.
* Work Closely with Head of Digital & Marketing on content strategy for digital and social platforms, ensuring high-quality, engaging, and brand-aligned output.
* Build strong relationships with key media, stakeholders, and partners to support the promotion of Irish football.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential:

* Minimum 7–10 years' experience in communications, PR, media, or a related field.
* Proven track record in developing and delivering communications strategies in a high-profile or fast-paced environment.
* Experience managing media relations, including acting as spokesperson or media lead.
* Strong leadership experience with responsibility for managing teams and cross-functional projects.

Desirable:

* Experience working within sport or a high-governance environment.
* Professional qualification in communications, journalism, public relations, or related discipline.

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages.
* Strong understanding of media landscapes, including digital and social platforms.
* Expertise in crisis communications and issues management.
