Offer Description
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2 withinUCD School of Earth Sciences.
We wish to appoint a Post-doctoral Researcher for 24 months in the field of remote sensing and petrology, starting in August 2025. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers working on the project "Next generation tools for developing hydrogen production and carbon storage in ophiolites", co-funded by Research Ireland Centre iCRAG and industry partner Decahydron. The research focus of this role will be the processing of various satellite and/or airborne hyperspectral surveys to produce a regional geological map of ophiolite lithologies and the overprinting serpentinising system in the UAE. Preliminary ground-control field mapping and samples of key lithologies are in place. The post will involve spectral, petrophysical, and geochemical characterization of reference samples, with research assistance provided, requiring laboratory work in Dublin, a visit to a hyperspectral lab, and geological field work in the UAE in January 2026. The map and petrophysical- geochemical dataset produced will provide surface constraints for sub-surface modelling, led by another project Post-Doctoral Researcher based at DIAS. These maps and models will guide H2 exploration and in situ carbon mineralization efforts in the area, including the targeting of deep boreholes to be drilled and sampled during the project. Working closely with project geophysicists, structural geologists, geochemists and company geologists, the candidate will contribute to the development of a high-powered playbook for exploring
serpentinising systems.

The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.
The PD2 post is intended for researchers that have completed PD1. As with the PD1, if you have already completed your PD2 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD2, or your total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 6 years, you should not apply and should refer to Research Fellow posts instead.
