Role Overview
Buttimer Engineering is seeking a highly experienced and proactive Senior Project Planner to lead the planning, scheduling, and programme control of complex engineering projects across multiple sectors in and outside Ireland.
The Senior Project Planner will play a key role in project governance, strategic planning, and decision support, working closely with project managers, engineering leads, commercial teams, and senior leadership to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and on time.
Key ResponsibilitiesProject Planning & Leadership
* Lead the development, maintenance, and control of integrated project programmes for large and complex multidisciplinary engineering projects
* Define and manage detailed work breakdown structures (WBS), logic, sequencing, and critical paths
* Integrate engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, approvals, and commissioning activities into cohesive schedules
* Provide planning input during bid, tender, and proposal stages, including baseline programme development and strategy
* Mentor and support junior planners and project team members
Progress Monitoring, Reporting & Controls
* Establish baseline schedules and performance measurement frameworks
* Monitor and analyse project performance against programme, identifying risks, delays, and opportunities
* Produce high-quality progress reports, dashboards, look-ahead schedules, and executive summaries
* Daily, bi-weekly and monthly look-ahead schedules
* Lead earned value analysis (EVM), forecasting, and schedule trend analysis
* Provide recovery and mitigation strategies where programme slippage occurs
Risk, Change & Scenario Management
* Proactively identify programme risks, constraints, and dependencies
* Assess the time impact of variations, change orders, and claims
* Lead schedule impact assessments and scenario planning exercises
* Support dispute resolution and claims preparation where required
Stakeholder & Team Coordination
* Act as the primary planning interface between project teams, management, clients, and external stakeholders
* Facilitate planning workshops, schedule reviews, and governance meetings
* Provide expert planning advice to project managers and senior leadership
* Support consistent planning and reporting standards across projects
Systems & Continuous Improvement
* Develop, implement, and maintain planning standards, templates, and best practices
* Support the enhancement of project controls and planning systems within Buttimer Engineering
* Ensure programme data integrity, traceability, and alignment with cost and risk controls
* Drive continuous improvement in planning processes and tools
Required Skills & Experience – Essential
* Experience in a senior planning or project controls role within engineering, construction, or consultancy environments
* Proven ability to manage complex, multidisciplinary project programmes
* Advanced proficiency in planning software (e.g. Primavera P6, MS Project, or equivalent)
* Strong understanding of project controls, risk management, and earned value principles
* Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
Desirable
* Experience within an engineering consultancy or heavy engineering environment
* Experience leading or mentoring planning teams
* Strong understanding of contract forms
* Experience supporting major tenders and strategic project planning
Qualifications
* Degree or diploma in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
* Completion of a Planning Course
* Professional certification (e.g. APM, PMI, or equivalent) (desirable)
