Overview of role:
The Clinical Nurse Manager 2 reports to The Assistant Director of Nursing and is accountable to the Director of Nursing in all matters relating to the job.
The CNM2 is responsible for the provision of a safe quality care service to all patients during their stay in the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic.
The post holder is responsible for management of all emergency situations that will occur on the day shift. The post holder will ensure all staff on duty are aware of emergency management procedures during the day and are orientated to their work and hospital environment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
To be an expert practitioner and role model in the clinical area, to utilise advanced skills in patient assessment that nursing staff have concerns about and to undertake appropriate clinical decisions and actions e.g. referral to medical practitioner/clinician.
To be personally responsible for keeping his/her own practice up to date and maintaining competency relevant to the role.
To develop and maintain good communication throughout the day nursing teams and others involved directly or indirectly with patient care to ensure a patient focused service.
To have a visible clinical presence.
To link with senior medical staff regarding the clinical management of patients.
To support nursing staff with clinical decision-making thereby enhancing their professional development.
To maintain clinical expertise to meet service needs and for the purpose of in-service education of staff.
To attend out of hours clinical emergencies and manage appropriately.
To ensure safe staffing levels including redeployment of staff as necessary in areas of increased activity.
To assess and deem nursing staff competent in the administration of intravenous drug administration.
To practice in accordance with all current statutory provisions.
To practice in accordance with all current policies, protocols and guidelines of the clinic.
To participate in the formulation of policies, protocols and guidelines.
To actively contribute to the process of clinical risk management.
To make a contribution to the development, implementation and review of nursing protocols, policies and procedures.
Develop strategies and service goals for the Inpatient Ward with the Clinical Nurse Management team.
Provide good professional leadership and vision, facilitate team building and planned care.
Maintain a quality standard of service. Lead a proactive quality improvement and support accreditation.
Develop a shared sense of commitment and participation amongst staff in change management in responding to the health needs of the patients.
Ensure all staff members are proficient in the management of patient care.
Audit current nursing practice and evaluate improvements in the quality of patient care including patient's impression of the service.
Provide planned individualised holistic care for patients and ensure efficient planning/liaison with interdisciplinary teams.
Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document the care of patients within the unit.
Demonstrate advanced specialist knowledge and provide clinical leadership in patient care.
Work with the Clinical Nurse management team and Practice Development in developing lead initiatives and developments that will enhance health gain for patients on the Ward.
Participate in the development, formulation and evaluation of guidelines, policies and procedures thus ensuring adherence to delivering a quality service.
Qualifications & Experience:
Be registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by An Bord Altranais.
Have at least five years post-registration Nurse Management experience in an acute hospital setting
Hold a management qualification or be in pursuit of same.
Previous management experience.
Possess well-developed leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills.
Computer skills.
