Senior Engineer - Operations and Asset Management
We are the people behind Ireland’s electricity grid. We operate the power system with world leading levels of variable asynchronous renewable generation, ensuring that everyone has power when they need it. We are now transforming the power system for future generations.
The Operations and Asset Management Office is central to the delivery of our primary role – the operation, development and enhancement of the power system and the wholesale electricity market. The Office is also responsible for the sustainable implementation of transmission system and market development to meet the future needs of all users of electricity.
The Team conducts activities ranging from load flow studies and system analysis to outage management, implementing and developing technical procedures and specifications, commissioning and testing of transmission infrastructure. Opportunities include HVDC integration, Control centre readiness, Grid and Network Code management, technical audits and compliance.
System Operations Function
The core activity of EirGrid as the Transmission System Operator (TSO) is to keep the lights on through meticulous planning and engineering analysis such as load‑flow studies. The team develops, tests and incorporates operational systems, tools, services and policies to operate the power system and integrate new technologies. They liaise with stakeholders to manage planned and unplanned outages, volume control, generator testing, scheduling, dispatch, risk management and respond to alarms and constraints to keep the grid within operational security standards. They also lead the development of strategies and frameworks to ensure resilience, business continuity and emergency response plans.
System Integrity Function
The team ensures operational planning, revenue metering and protection of the power system. They develop the annual and multi‑year Transmission Outage Planning (TOP) and Generation Outage Planning (GOP), coordinate protection relays, oversee grid performance, support de‑commissioning, and formulate energisation instructions.
System Support and Analysis Function
They facilitate the end‑to‑end operational life cycle of grid connections, maintain Grid Code compliance, analyse performance of renewable and conventional units, publish market data, and conduct techno‑economic modelling for cost recovery and tariff design.
Interconnection Function
This multidisciplinary team manages EirGrid’s interconnectors and operational readiness for new HVDC interconnectors and marine assets, performing techno‑economic modelling, financial and risk management and supporting cross‑border market integration.
Operations Development and Compliance Function
The team delivers programme delivery for COAMO, integrates changes from Grid Codes and Market Codes, manages Governance, Risk, Compliance, and Audit obligations, and engages external stakeholders on technical code changes.
