Role Overview
The Road Design Lead will take responsibility for leading the design and delivery of multi-disciplinary transportation projects across Ireland. This role involves overseeing roads, public transport, Active Travel, and public realm schemes through all project stages including feasibility, optioneering, planning, detailed design, and construction.
The successful candidate will play a key leadership role within a growing transportation team, managing design coordination, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and buildable design solutions.
Key Responsibilities
* Act as Design Lead on multi-disciplinary transportation projects (roads, public transport, Active Travel, public realm).
* Coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams on Employer Design and Design & Build contracts.
* Lead the production and delivery of design outputs across all project stages.
* Ensure designs meet relevant standards and translate technical requirements into practical, cost-effective solutions.
* Review and check designs from other disciplines, manage design interfaces, and resolve clashes.
* Provide line management and mentoring to junior engineers and technicians.
* Engage with and manage clients, stakeholders, and project partners.
* Contribute during construction stages including contract administration and construction supervision.
* Support continuous improvement and adoption of developing technologies and best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree Level 8/9 in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) with Engineers Ireland (or equivalent), or close to achieving chartership.
* Significant postgraduate experience, primarily within a consultancy environment.
* Demonstrated experience delivering multi-disciplinary transportation projects in Ireland and/or the UK.
* Experience preparing full design packs (drawings and documentation) for relevant design stages.
* Experience across feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed design, statutory processes, contract documentation, and construction supervision.
* Experience in Employer Design and/or Design & Build projects.
* Full Irish / EU driving licence.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
* Strong knowledge of transportation engineering and road design principles.
* Comprehensive understanding of roads design elements including:
* Road geometry
* Drainage
* Utilities coordination
* Geotechnics
* Pavement design
* Road signage and markings
* Vehicle Restraint Systems
* Proficiency in relevant software including:
* AutoCAD Civil 3D
* Bentley OpenRoads
* MicroDrainage
* Navisworks
* Strong understanding of applicable design standards and statutory requirements.
* Ability to coordinate and lead multi-disciplinary teams effectively.
* Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
* Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively.
* Demonstrated leadership potential with the capacity to progress into more senior roles.
