The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland is a postgraduate medical training college dedicatedto ensuring that doctors have the skills toprovide patients with the best possible care. Founded in 1654, the college supports doctors to enhance their skills, competencies, and professionalism throughout their working lives.

Through its Faculties and Institutes, The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, offers medical training programmes, examinations, diplomas, and educational courses to equip doctors with the skills and knowledge they need to care for patients and run safe and efficient healthcare systems. It also offers a range of educational diplomas and courses for learners in the wider healthcare sector.


Position

Role: Research Manager

Duration: Specific Purpose Contract covering maternity leave

Reporting to: Manager, Quality Enhancement Department

Closing date: 20 January 2026 at 17:00

Leadership and Team Management

* Provide strategic leadership and direct line management to departmental staff, fostering a culture of excellence, integrity, ethical research practice and continuous improvement.
* Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, performance reviews, delegate effectively, and support staff development.

Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration

* Represent the department in cross-functional initiatives and collaborative research projects, both internally and externally.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including researchers, Medical Training Bodies, the Medical Council, the Forum and the NDTP.
* Prepare structured reports and presentations for senior leadership, Council, and external partners.

Strategic Planning and Implementation

* Collaboratively lead the strategic direction of the research in RCPI, aligning departmental goals with RCPI's broader mission.
* To personally deliver and support the team in delivering a programme of research projects aligned to the RCPI strategy.
* Lead the development and review of policies and systems to support research governance and enhancing research project delivery to a high standard.
* Identify opportunities for innovation, improvement, and research opportunity, driving strategic change and long-term impact.

Operations Management

* Lead the development and execution of the annual Business Plan for the Research Department, monitoring KPIs and performance metrics.
* Ensure efficient and effective delivery of research outputs and associated communications.
* Manage RCPI's Research Ethics and Research Committees.
* Oversee budget planning and financial performance in collaboration with Finance.
* Provide cross-functional support and integration with aligned departments across RCPI.


Requirements

Requirements

* Qualification up to PhD level, with a minimum MSc in science, psychology, education or related disciplines.
* Minimum 5 years in a research role with demonstrated operational and strategic leadership.
* Strong interpersonal and influencing skills; ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
* Skilled in cross-functional teamwork and stakeholder engagement.
* Skilled in communications within and across teams, within RCPI and with external partners and collaborators.
* High personal effectiveness and organisational capability.
* Strong analytical and planning capabilities; ability to contribute at strategic level.
* Demonstrated ability to lead and support teams.
* Experience in budget management and financial reporting.
