BioMarin’s Technical Operations group creates our drugs for clinical trials and scales production for the commercial market. Engineers, technicians, scientists, and support staff build and maintain advanced manufacturing processes, provide quality assurance and control, and procure the goods and services required to support manufacturing and coordinate worldwide distribution.
Research Associate – Analytical Sciences
Location: Shanbally, Ringaskiddy, Cork (Onsite). Closing Date: 20 September 2025.
Role Summary
The Analytical Sciences department at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. is seeking a skilled Analytical Biochemist and/or Biologist at the Research Associate level to support gene therapy and enzyme replacement therapy projects. The successful candidate will execute a wide variety of analytical methods and assays for the characterization of therapeutic candidates, focusing on testing to support clinical and commercial process development teams.
Responsibilities
* Execute product testing to support Drug Substance and Drug Product process development teams.
* Perform non‑routine testing of in‑process samples and final product samples for key projects.
* Conduct analytical tests using techniques such as HPLC, UPLC, CE, FTIR, and plate‑based methods.
* Document all test results accurately and in compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and company SOPs.
* Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including Drug Substance Technologies, Drug Product Device Technologies, Manufacturing, and Quality.
* Provide concise quantitative analysis of data and interpretation of experimental results.
* Deliver effective oral presentations at departmental meetings.
* Report progress to the manager on a weekly basis for each program.
* Write and share experimental plans, results, and data in group meetings.
* Catalogue data and reports electronically in an accessible manner for inspections.
Experience and Skills
* Required Skills:
o Strong understanding of GMP, GLP, and regulatory standards.
o Familiar with protein chemistry/function and bioassays.
o Experience in cell culture techniques and protein expression/activity readout methods.
o Excellent communication, collaboration, and writing skills.
o Proven data analysis, interpretation, and scientific communication skills.
o Proven flexibility and execution skills to deliver in a fast‑paced, multi‑tasking environment.
* Desired Skills:
o Experience in method troubleshooting, qualification, and transfer.
o Knowledge of biopharmaceutical development is a plus.
Education
* Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and at least 2 years of relevant experience, or 1 year experience with a Master’s degree.
Equipment
* Operation of standard laboratory equipment for biochemistry and cellular assays.
