Staff Nurse Inpatients General 11 month Fixed Term Contract - UPMC Whitfield Hospital
Overview of role
We are currently recruiting for a Staff Nurse Inpatients General position at UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
* Act as preceptor to preregistration students, mentor new clinical and non‑clinical staff, and support colleagues when needed.
* Liaise with link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments to develop and maintain UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised learning environment for student nurses.
* Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with the multidisciplinary team to ensure a good team spirit and collaborative working practices.
* Support the unit manager, meeting responsibilities set by the Unit Manager or the Director of Nursing.
* Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with the consultant/nursing team and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
* Accept responsibility and be accountable for the holistic care of a named group of patients on a shift basis.
* Maintain the highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety at all times.
* Act as patient advocate, providing emotional and psychological support to patients.
* Understand the principles of pre‑assessment.
* Maintain high standards of written and verbal communication.
* Maintain professional registration and submit annual verification to HR.
* Keep up to date with clinical risk reporting, occupational health, facilities management, patient moving and handling, resuscitation, and health and safety policies.
* Manage departmental financial and budgetary controls.
* Report and manage all health and safety concerns.
* Participate in and lead research, audit, and quality improvement activities.
* Support the quality and patient safety team to achieve and maintain accreditation standards.
Health and Safety
* Uphold UPMC Whitfield Hospital’s policies on fire, infection control, radiation safety, and health and safety at work regulations.
* Identify potential risks for staff, patients, and visitors, and adhere to incident reporting procedures.
* Observe general duty of care for the health, safety, and well‑being of all persons in the hospital.
Professional / Education
* Develop skills to act as shift co‑ordinator/team leader, including workload assessment and allocation.
* Manage workload to meet patient care needs and ensure staff can take allocated breaks.
* Control and administer drugs according to clinic and statutory guidelines.
* Develop IT skills for efficient clinical work and be proficient with Isoft and other patient pathway systems.
* Liaise directly with consultants regarding patient care and bed allocation.
* Conduct risk assessments of the theatre environment and report incidents according to hospital guidelines.
* Engage in continuous professional development and research‑based nursing care.
* Maintain confidentiality of all information, complying with GDPR legislation.
* Collaborate with the scheduling team for patient bed and theatre slot allocation.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered in the General Division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and maintain annual registration.
* Basic Life Support certification.
* Minimum one year of post‑registration experience.
* Suitable for any ward area within the hospital scope, including surgical, medical, recovery, and day ward.
* Attend all mandatory education sessions and maintain a professional portfolio.
* Act quickly to address urgent matters.
