Offer description

Join to apply for the Environment Manager role at Primark.

Primark is an international clothing retailer employing more than 70,000 colleagues across 16 countries in Europe and the US. Founded in Ireland in 1969 under the Penney’s brand, Primark aims to create maximum joy at minimum cost – less money and less impact on the planet. We continue to expand across new and existing markets with the aim of reaching 530 stores by the end of 2026. Every person impacts the culture at Primark. Our values: Caring, Dynamic, and Together outline the behaviours we expect of our people as we work with each other, our customers, our suppliers and our partners. Let’s see what impact you can make!

We’re transforming the way we deliver technology changes across our enterprise systems—from ERP platforms to digital and cloud‑native environments. To support this transformation, we are seeking an experienced Environment Manager who will play a pivotal role in managing and optimising our technology environments across the development lifecycle. You will be responsible for overseeing the strategy, governance, and operational management of all our environments, working closely with Engineering Managers, Delivery Leads, Product Teams and partners to ensure environments are fit for purpose, secure, scalable, and aligned with delivery timelines. You will enable seamless environment provisioning, configuration, and maintenance across a diverse technology landscape, improving deployment frequency, reducing environment‑related issues, and accelerating time‑to‑market for technology changes while optimising environments for cost.

Key Responsibilities

* Manage and improve the Environment Lifecycle: Oversee the provision, configuration, and maintenance of technology environments across lifecycle stages, including Development, System Integration Testing (SITS), Pre‑Production, and supporting Production. This spans everything from on‑premises ERP systems to modern cloud environments.
* Meet Demand: Efficiently manage and fulfil requests for new and existing environments, ensuring timely delivery to support project timelines and team needs.
* Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams and partners to understand environment requirements, resolve issues, and communicate environment status.
* Environment Rationalisation: Analyse current environment usage and identify opportunities to consolidate, standardise, and streamline our environment landscape.
* Strategy Development & Execution: Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for environment optimisation, focusing on cost efficiency, demand fulfilment, and adherence to best practices. Work across domains to support a clear route to live, working with partners to deliver a consistent model across technology.
* Process Improvement: Continuously identify and implement improvements to environment management processes, tools, and documentation, making our complex environment landscape simple to manage, control, and optimise.
* Environment Cost Optimisation: Monitor, forecast, and manage environment‑related costs across all stages of the delivery lifecycle. Align environment provisioning and scheduling with demand to ensure efficient resource utilisation, reduce waste, and support cost‑effective scaling across ERP, digital, and cloud‑native platforms.
* Security, vulnerability management, and compliance: Ensure robust security practices across all environments, including proactive identification and remediation of vulnerabilities. Maintain compliance with industry and audit requirements.
* Incident management: Own the resolution of incidents and escalations across environments, ensuring timely and effective communication. Act as the key liaison between the environment teams and senior stakeholders, translating complex issues into clear updates and managing expectations with transparency.
* Automation: Build environments of the future using automation and IaC, removing manual work, delivering environments that are scalable, and provisioned with automation.
* Metrics and KPIs: Monitor and report on key performance indicators across environments, including uptime, provisioning speed, and cost efficiency. Ensure metrics are aligned with business goals, demand forecasting, and future planning.
* Store labs: Develop the model store to provide real‑world POS and store environments across different markets for testing our future store capabilities.

Knowledge & Experience Required

* Proven experience in environment management within a complex IT landscape, ideally in a retailer or similar fast‑paced industry.
* Exceptional organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities and deliver under pressure.
* Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and QA methodologies.
* Demonstrated ability to rationalise environments and develop and execute strategic optimisation plans.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of effective stakeholder management and collaboration with internal and external partners.
* Experience with various environment technologies and tools (e.g., virtualisation, cloud platforms, containerisation) is a plus.
* A proactive, problem‑solving mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement.

Let’s talk lifestyle

* 27 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays – with the option to buy up to 5 more.
* Flexible working arrangements, including the opportunity for an early Friday finish.
* Access to a subsidised cafeteria.
* Primark Perks – enjoy discounts with local partner businesses near our offices.
